Alright... does anyone know the BEST OPTIONS for MINI-MAG UPGRADE???

Keep in mind that although the L1Ps are getting favorable reviews, the L2Ps have yet to "run thru the mill". They are just starting to get into the hands of us light junkies. My favorite and most carried AA Mag is the TerraLux TLE5 conversion. It has proven more reliable than my NiteIze conversion. With that tail clickie, you will no longer have the candle mode capability. If the TerraLux ever fails where you are in a hard spot to be in, at least you will have the original spare bulb in the AA Mags tail cap. Just swap it out. And you will still have a working light. The Sandwiche Shoppe has some real nice stuff. I have one of my AA Mags hooked up with one of their kits. And it has the most even beam I' ve seen for this kind of light. Good stuff.

I'm sure the Fenix is a fine light, but some of us don't want to throw our MiniMags away or into a junk drawer. They're quality lights but need a little tweaking AKA modding.

OK. Add an Opalec Newbeam mod, two Lithium batteries and use them as close-in, long running task lights that can be stored for years if necessary.

Then get a Fenix as your "What in the #$&%, THAT IS BRIGHT!" light.

Now you're talking. As we say on CPF, get both. :D

I'm not familiar with the Opalec Newbeam, nor what the Sandwich Shoppe has... you guys seem to be in-tune with what they're about, can you give me any specs, comparisons, or reviews?

Thanks, sounds intriguing...

I'll probably swing for the TerraLUX TLE5 to start out, then go for the L1P since it's smaller than the Mini-Mag. From there I want to find out about even smaller things such as a Solitaire LED upgrade for my keychain.

You know, TECHNIALLY you can drive a 2.4v LED directly off the batts. Few minutes of work to modify the plug to fit & modify the reflector to fit the LED.

not the brightest(at least not the LED I had laying around), picked up another led today, 2200mcd(something like 15x brighter than the one I had laying around, 150mcd)... so this has only cost me $3cad and about 5min of my time.

Only hard part is clipping the top lead to the right length so it will break the connection when you push down(same way the incan bulb works).

Probably the TLE5 mod would be the easiest and perhaps cost effective, and it has fairly good battery life. Another thing to check out would be the ceramic hotwire mod that you can by the (hard to find) parts for on candlepowerforums. The numbers show them to be as bright as a 6d maglite, except you can't power it with normal alkaline batteries.

Edit: You only get about 30 min of usable (read: power of the sun) light with the hotwire mod though.

I don't care what people say about my flashlights. I've got crappy Ozark Trail flashlights, the huge Maglights, a mini Maglite, a Surefire knockoff, some crappy no name brand light that has gone through five bulbs in three years, and some Rayovac flashlights. Only the Surefire knockoff and the huge Maglite have really given a good, bright, far reaching illumination.

I'm also looking at a real Surefire, possibly the Executive Defender.

A2 Aviator, E2D Executive Defender and E2O Outdoorsman

I'll add an Amen to that, any attempt to save your $10 maglight is mostly a waste of time and money you could spend on a better light. Mag hasn't improved basic models in 20 years, and the improvement in flashlights during the last five years has been phenominal.

Sounds like a good plan. The L1P has a little brother, L0P which is almost as bright, uses AAA batteries and should fit nicely on your keychain.
