i recently ordered (or atleast tried to) a leatherman steen which i posted a thread about and their website said they had them in stock hence why i ordered it. so i get up this morning and check my email and they sent an email telling me they were out of stock...then i check my checking account and they charged me for it. how can you charge me for something you dont even have?

They must not have updated their website to reflect what they actually had in stock. Most places charge your method of payment in that case when they ship to you. All I know to do is call them and ask their policy regarding this.

This seems to be a common practice. Take the order-charge the card. Did their web site actually indicate the number of that particular model that they had in stock? Or did they have a pic of the item and nothing in the description to advise you that it was out of stock? If you don't want to wait for a back order, you might cancel your order with a phone call and direct them to credit your card. I assume you used a debit.
If you are in doubt about what is or isn't in stock, a phone call to most dealers should answer that question. If you continue to get voice mail, you might have concerns.
