Hey guys how are yah

Long story short I launched a rattan stick today a good 50 feet away:D. Firstly my hands were sweaty and also I was using someone else's stick.

I need a good tape to apply to my sticks & it should last the test of time.

I have used the below, but have not taken a liking to them for one reason or another.

Hockey tape
Electrical tape
Duct tape
Fiberglass tape

any help is much appreciated

stay safe & train hard

Hockey tape would probably give you the best grip. I can't say from personal experience however. I have a set of sticks with electrical tape on them but it's on the impact and not the grip end, and that is to just to stop any splinters from getting on the mats where I train.

Hockey tape tends to make your hands all black and becomes quite sticky as well :D

I use the electrical tape because after a while the rattan fibers tend to stick out.

take care

What do you guys think about grip tape

This tape is used on the top of skateboards, and I think it would do a good job. anyone here ever use it

Hockey tape can be kind of unpleasant for anyone on the recieving end of your stick, it can really abraid your partner doing things that otherwise would not hurt at all. I'll second the sex wax vote, never thought of using it on my sticks before though.

FMA sure is attracting a much different crowd than i would have expected

Go to Walmart or Lowes and pick up some spray on truck bedliner. They also sell this in a can that can be applied with a brush. Prepare the grip of the stick by light sanding if necessary. Painter's tape will help make everything look professional. Bedliner seems to work well. You could then go over the stick with some clear enamel to seal it and give it some shine.

I have also had good luck with tennis racquet grips.

Y/W for the links, cant be havin folks launching escrima sticks randomly, . . . " I swear officer it was an accident! It wasnt a drive by caneing!"

First off, work on your grip strength and do not rely on a mechanical means to keep the stick in your hand. I would recommend the Captains of Crush hand grippers, or something along those lines.

I only wrap my rattan sticks when they start to fray, so I can get a little more life out of them. I think I only have tape on one of my synthetic sticks, and they are much slicker than rattan.

All those caveats aside, the best tape I have found is a silicone stretch tape. It doesn't have any adhesive in it, as it bonds to itself. It doesn't come off on you hands like hockey or cloth tape either. You can find usually find it at one of the national hardware chains if you look in the right place. It's cheaper and easier to use than tennis grip tape or whatever else people are using these days, too.

I have a quite a strong grip:D. all kiddin aside i have the cc grippers, but its just at the end of class many factors are in play. Sweaty hands, tired and rattan is slippery. appreciate the help i'll be sure to try out your suggestion.

take care

I handled the Cold Steel polypropylene escrima sticks today and noticed they had a slightly "grippy" quality to them. Might be worth looking into.

How’s the quality of the cold steel sticks that you handled? I heard a review in the prac-tac forum of one, and the guy said it broke after a couple of swipes against his heavy bag if I remember right.

Wrap the handle in white cloth first aid tape and then wrap a strip or two across your palms as well. I do this when using a machette to clear brush for extended periods and it helps.

I'll have to go look for that thread. They struck me as being more flexible than rattan, and appeared durable, but I didn't strike anything with them. I'll be waiting till I get a few more opinions before I grab a set myself.... or maybe I'll just have to try them out.

To maintain a "natural" rattan look while adding grippiness:

Go to a dollar store and buy some cheap clear epoxy.
Get a cheap bag of sand (or borrow a handful from a sandbox).

Apply light amount of epoxy on grip area. Apply sand. Let dry. Presto.

(And work on grip strength like J8mes said. However, I've experienced the loss of grip control when I've been hit in the forearm a few times or had some serious fatigue.)
