Alright guys all of you get in here

I think i'm gonna try most of your suggestions as soon as i order some ugly sticks from bloodsport. I was thinking of getting some cold steel sticks as well, but man they are expensive & yeah I heard of a fellow forumite break them in 2 or 3 pieces while using them. That was probably from a bad batch anyway thats just my opinion.

take care & thanks for the help

I like bloodsport.com/K.I.L. sticks very much. However, I found the "ugly sticks" weren't that great of a deal. At least, in the batch I bought there were only about 4 usable sticks.

Well guys I tried using Grip tape & it works, but i think you would need to use a glove as well. I got a lot of it free from a skateboard shop, and i believe it is the best substitute.

thanks for the help and take care

roughen up the grip area with a rasp.

or, if that doesn't work, rub the roughened area down with a little magnesium carbonate chalk (the stuff rock climbers and powerlifters use).

You might try some Wilson H2OVERGRIP. It's a tennis racket handle tape that absorbs perspiration and then dries itself out after use. It even provides a fairly comfortable cushion with little bulk. I've used yards of the stuff wrapping different training and carry implements and absolutely love it.

Just work on your grip strength. No need for placebo's! And a glove is a major NO-GO IMHO....nut up and get strong! End of story!

As to your sticks..contact Bamboo & Rattan or Franks Cane and Rush supply and order bulk...they will cut them if you wish. Then learn how to treat them yourself!

Why Pay 20 -30 bucks for a set of sticks when you can get them in bulk. I bought two sibat's and 8 pairs of baston pre cut from bamboo and rattan. With shipping I paid a total of $81 dollars. It cost me another 5 dollars to treat them!

I never used a tape... only duct tape, on impact ends, but that goes without saying :D.
I am the guy who broke the CS stick (there may be someone else, I don't remeber clearly, but the "2 or 3 swipes" sounds like me). Several strikes against a strike post, that was all it took to break the stick into several pieces. I received a replacement stick and I am whacking heavy bags and tire dummy with it ever since, but I never tried it on a strike post again... I am convinced that I would be able to break it once more.
It is a good stick, but definitely not for striking unyelding things with power, IMHO.

2nd that with what Puting Carabao said. If you are a beginner, its usually suggested that you work on grip strength first and not take a shortcut. Kinda frowned upon since there are no shortage of grip excercises with sticks. Most FMA guys I know tape sticks for repair rather than for grip.

Bamboo and Rattan works in NJ IS the place to go and is the major supplier of many top instructors in the US whether they admit it or not, unless they have a contact in PI. Top notch Manau rattan. No need to even treat it unless bought raw. Many will buy and mark it up for re sale.

The owner is a nice guy and looks like a hippie throwback, definitely not a martial artist and can rattle off more names in the Martial arts cirlce than I can care to mention. Thas proof enough for me.
