Alright... iPhones?

Once you get over the cool factor and wow factor, there lots to like about the iphone.

pro cool factor fun toy versus truly useful tool. I.E. unlike palm phone.

beautiful screen probably best in the business feels solid compared to most touch screen phones out there google phones feel cheap compared to iphone.

con no voice recording? what gives

short battery life if something really bad happened you be toast since most people have to charge it daily

voice quality its far from being great

much more fragile compared to push button phone, but thats the price you pay for cool factor.

no gps? even older crack berry had one.

uncomfortable without headset or bluetooth. think about putting a brick next to your ear.

Check out the 'HiPhone', a Chrinese <sic> clone of the iPhone, but improved in certain respects like 2 SIM cards.

Two more that I'm currently looking at:

The Blackberry Bold and Tmobile G1. The G1 is appealing since I'm already with Tmobile, but I don't know much about the google Android platform. So far it seems like there aren't any drug info programs that are supported by Android, which is of course the main goal anyway.

Anyone else have the G1?

I've been using smartphones for many years. I had a Palm Treo 650, a Samsung Blackjack, and now the iPhone 3G.

Let me say this - there is NO COMPARISON at all...

Firstly, the iPhone has BY FAR the best battery life of any smartphone I've ever owned. Actually, almost 2X as good. With casual use, I've gotten the iPhone to >3 days standby (4 hours total use). Just turn off WiFi and Location Services (GPS) and you'll get crazy battery life. You can stretch it another whole day if you use 2G instead of 3G internet... but let's face it - what's the point?

It's very intuitive to use, and works just fine with Windows or Mac (not Linux... very sad). The call quality is great... the reception is better than the Blackjack.

Now, I have to talk about the Internet Browser - Mobile Safari is what makes the iPhone stand out. Short of Java and Flash, it can display >90% of web pages natively. Coming from Mobile IE on Windows Mobile 5.0 of the Blackjack, this is a big change, because mIE mangled even the simplest web pages. The processor is also MUCH faster on the iPhone, which means that while on the Blackjack the page would download, and then take 1 min to render, it comes up much quicker on the iPhone.

With the new Google Sync pushing bidirectional Microsoft Exchange data for Contacts and Calendar (Email coming soon), the biggest reason (for me) for not choosing the iPhone has been eliminated.

The headset that comes with the Phone is a good pair of earbuds, with a little bud that works as a mic to make it into a handsfree and as a button to control music.

The downsides:
1. Lack of a document handling suite. There is no "My Documents" folder on the iPhone, so even though you can view PDFs just fine, the only way to get them is to email them to yourself.
2. No way to customize the home screen. It's all about apps, not data. I really liked having my schedule for the day at-a-glance on WM 5.0.
3. Battery that can't be replaced except at the apple store - expect to drop $100 at the 2 year mark for a new battery (might as well buy a new phone).
4. Don't drop it - the glass covering the screen is very hard, which keeps scratches out... but will shatter on impact ($110-150 to repair). I used to drop my Blackjack at least once a month onto concrete, and it was no worse for the wear.
5. No tethering. The Blackjack would tether via USB or bluetooth to both Linux and Windows without a problem. Tethering IS possible on the iPhone, but only if you "jailbreak" it... and only via WiFi - which eats battery like crazy. Upside: the iPhone browser is so good - there's virtually no need for tethering.

P.S. I was looking at iPhone vs G1, and iPhone came out a clear winner - the G1 is an ugly device, with terrible battery life, and a host of hardware problems. The Android platform is very promising, but the hardware isn't polished. Maybe in 2 years, when my ATT contract is up, I'll look at the G3 or G4.

I have a T-mobile G-Phone.My sister has the I-phone basically the same thing.
I prefer the typing ability on the G-phone as I need to e-mail allot for work.
I also have a laptop with cell-card.
The phone sure won't replace a lap-top.
My eyes are not what they once were and have trouble surfing the net on the phone but if I need emergency info,map,e-mail access it's very convenient and faster than booting up the laptop.
It's also something to do while sitting and waiting in building departments where taking a laptop would be a pain.
I don't see the need if you don't need one for work but they're cool if you have the money.
Having access to most knowledge on earth,e-mail as well as satellites and maps in your pocket is pretty amazing.

I also bought the Jawbone2 blue-tooth devise.
Awesome well worth the money.
I make calls with my construction crew working right next to me.
I use to need to get in my truck and roll up the windows to speak or hear on the phone.

I have the Iphone and can't see how I got along without it before :p I've not only got my phone and music all in one, but I can store all 500 of my numbers.....check out what the weathers going to be, download the newest album of my favorite band, make sure I don't have anything going on for the day that I forgot about, see what the surf is looking like at all my favorite beaches in about 20 seconds, catch up on national headlines, see how crappy the stock market is doing, message 10 people in about a minute to see who wants to surf wherever I'm going, find a new restarant for breakfast after a good surf session that's got a high rating (plus a map showing me how to get there), figure out what movie I want to see and where later on and check my email.......all before I get out of bed. All of this in the five minutes before I hop out of bed. Not to mention the zillion other things I use if for on a daily basis.

You might want to look into a Palm Pre before making a purchasing decision. Some claim it is far and away better than the iPhone for web-like activities. Frankly, I can't imagine a technology fate worse than having to deal with email and the web using a cellphone, but if I was actually interested in that I'd certainly compare the Pre to the iPhone before making a decision.
ONLY if Palm has solved its hardware QC issues in the last couple of years. I had 3.........count them 3, 600 series Treo's die on me in a 14 month period. Regardless of whether you are an Apple fanboi or a Crackberry addict, this is one problem that you are highly unlikely to ever experience with either of those products.

That's more things than I would do in 6 months!

Heh. I do all those thngs too, though not necessarily in the first 10 minutes I'm awake. I'm still waiting for a phone that can get a cold beer out of the fridge, though.
