Alternative cooking...open fire roasted cornish hens

Those look GREAT!

I have a question about the stick you used for a spit. I have heard that certain woods can poison the food. IIRC, these were east coast hardwoods, but I don't recall the details. Any info on what woods are safe or unsafe?

Thanks.

Thanks all, glad you enjoy the thread.

Not really sure on the poisonous woods, I'll have to look into it. I tend to use hickory, oak, maple with no problems, though O must admit I'm not really sure what the tree I used this time is but I have used smaller branches from it for roasting sticks before. I submitted pics of it to a botany site for identification.

Thanks for the pics. What a great way to spend time with your daughter. They grow up way to fast-then they bring boys around-then they get married--Then grand children arrive and you get to start teaching again. WOW Life is good.

I got hungry from this thread so I went and cooked this:

This is the oddest thing that has happened since I have been a member here. I JUST cooked a rabbit over an open flame like this yesterday. I even thought it would be nice to have pictures. (I don't have a digi cam)

Looks good, now i'll have to do it again just because those look so good :)
