Alternative fishbaits

Baits that catch fish that yon may not have thought of. Could come in handy when out of bait or in an emaergency.

Breakfast cereal. Wheaties works real well. Mix it with a liquid water soda, beer works well. This works mainly for carp.

Another carp bait, but I have caught bullheads and channel cats on it is Whole kernal sweet corn. Its my favorite carp bait.

Bag worms. The ones you find on evergreen trees and shrubs in their cocoons. Perhaps the finest live bait Ive used. They are tough to remove from the cocoon . I use manicuring scissors for that job. Catches everything.

Ivory soap cut into small pieces. Use a weight and about a foot of leader. It floats and I think that attracts channel cats.


What are some of the alternative baits that you guys have used?
 
I've used Mexican made Zote Soap with some success in the past, but only for trotlines. It is a good soap for backpacking and camping too as it is pretty biodegradable.

I strictly fish with artificials. I don't do much catfishing or carp fishing, but I have caught a couple of each on tubes or jigs. The carp in the reseviors by me get huge; Ive seen em up to 40lbs. I would love to spend a day trying to catch those guys, gonna have to try some day.

You hook into a 40 lb carp and you will be hooked.
 
Thats what I scared of. What would I do with the thousands of bass lures I have:(
 
Fish for everything. Bass are my favorite but are overfished here in Missouri . I fish for whatever is available at the moment.
 
I fish for all Fresh water fish in TX.... I prefer live bait while I use artifical to occupie my Son. LOL ..Yep wheaties will catch the carp...entrails from other fish....catch Catfish & crappie & Bluegills/Small mouth Bass.....

Yep...for some reason guts/blood will get'em going! :barf:

I used leaf chewing tobacco to get some bluegills one time when I was younger...just got curious and tried it out...got 3 decent size fish out of that one! -Matt-
 
Grasshopper work well for large mouth. Crayfish, minnows, etc. All stuff you could, in theory, get in a survival situation. The minnows would be the hardest, but you could rig a net out of a shirt or something. Plus, if you boil the crayfish, they are a meal by themselves. ;)
 
Mullberries and wild grapes. caught both carp and bullheads on them.

13 year locust. Bluegills ate them up.
 
for Carp. Boil a cup of water, add a cup of white suger. Stir untill the suger is melted. Add a cup of white flour and mix well. Turn of the stove and add corn meal keep mixing by hand until it gets tacky. We use rigs that we buy at a Korean store.. Carp loves sweets. Last time we went fishing with my dad we had 32 carps 5 nice catfish. I like to catch the younger golden carp as they taste so much better...

Well im sure you all heard of Gefilte fish. I only eat the one my mom makes and she likes to use only the Golden Carp( Golden carp would avg about 2-5lb) It has a golden color to its scales Golden carp has more of a sweet taste to the meat.. The other way we cook it i did mention it before. In a VERY large pot we put some oil get it hot and add some white onion. When it gets clear and alittle dark you add water. Into the water you put potatos and carp that you cut into smaller size. You can mix and match fish i like to add all the catfish the same time. Salt and black peper to taste with a few bay leaves. Cook it on med heat untill the potatos are done. Do watch the bones lol but they are easy to pick as the meat falls right off. My dad loves to eat the carp heads. I also do like the taste of the catfish better this way then fried. I were told that fisherman in eastern eroupe would cook the dish while fishing and everyone would add some fish they had. My dad also said that on the side there would be some bread with butter and garlic..

every type of cheapo hot dog works well too, also tried spam cut in strips for Bass... thats one of my favs if nothing else works. I fish em like a sanko..
 
I've caught plenty of sunfish on an unbaited hook when jigged enticingly. This is why I include a few shiny hooks in my WSK.

Most people wont eat carp. Ive had it a lot. Fried on a sandwhich with lots of tartar sauce. Canned some once. It was delicious.
