alternative forge coating?

What's wrong with watering down chimney sweep brand furnace cement and coating a forge with it? Will it work? It's rated to 2700 degrees.

Has anyone tried it?

The stuff I have is grey.

My forge is already coated, but it could use a little more.

Take care,
Brook

I used some to fill in cracks in my homemade clay liner.I only fired it twice since but it appears to be fine so far.

Nothing wrong with it. in the long run It may be a bit more expensive than buying dry 3000F furnace cement. the extra 300F can make a huge difference esp if you get into forge welding. Lining a forge can be done with clay from your backyard if you want to play with it. If you are on that tight of a budget i would recommend making a knife from stock removal, selling it and buying good High temp refactory. I have found Mouzzo in 50lb sacks for $25 ea in Portland.

I have 50 lbs of potters clay (pine lake white) as well as cheap kitty litter for oil spills. Maybe I'll play around and see what I can come up with.

Thanks guys.
