Alternatives to BM Apparition?

I am thinking about getting a Benchmade Apparition. What are some alternatives? What I am looking for is a nice looking, fairly dressy knife, with a sub-$200 street price (the lower the better though), with a non-coated plain edge blade. I'll be using this knife for things that need to be clean (mostly things that will go in my mouth, though rust won't be an issue since I'll be wiping down the blade with alcohol wipes after each use), as opposed to my Avalanche which has enough poisons and germs on it to be considered a biohazard (it looks clean, but is used for everything from automechanics to scraping gum off my shoe). Most important is that the knife can take a razors edge (this avalanche will push cut paper, but since the blade is kinda thick and it's S60V it never really gets to be like a razor). Oh yeah, and who's the store that sponsors this forum? My favorite store is no longer so I might as well buy from the store that runs this forum.
Thanks,
Richard

Oh, I forgot to add, it also must have a clip, otherwise I have a lot of knives that would do nicely already, but I find I never use a knife that doesn't have a clip.

I saw you didn't like the apparation one bit, and you mentioned something that I was kinda worried about: the plastic handles feel cheap. How plasticy do they feel? Are they not a weighty plastic? Any ideas to fit my need? Perhaps a spyderco persian? Is there something else nice out there that gets real nice and sharp and looks good and has a clip?
Thanks,
Richard

Here is a good one for you. You will probably hear very few referrals to this manufacturer although it is popular with military and police (those that really depend on knives every day). You can get a regular or auto version.

A Microtech MSE-SC with plain blade and clip. It has an aluminum handle with inserts.

It is small enough to carry easily. It has a belt cutter and a window basher button (whatever you call that little carbide tip on the back of the handle for beating in car windows). The are built like a Mack Truck, IMHO.

Acutally, believe it or not my brother actually has a mini socom elite. It's got a different blade from the one on the website, but it's basically the same. One of the best danged knives I ever did see, but it's not as dressy as what I'm looking for. I have an avalanche for doing heavy duty stuff, I want this to be a knife that the sheeple say "oooh, ahhh" not "take my money, just don't hurt me" but I don't want to sacrifice blade length either. I'd say 3 inch min 4 inch max.
Thanks,
Richard

camillus dominator, not real dressy though, but it makes up for it in its usefullnes!!! ;)

Ok, to give an idea, something like the seki cut hiro little blue liner lock, except larger and with a clip.

Okay, here's another one. It isn't in your basic black either so nobody should get rattled. But you can get black if the spirits move you. The blade can be either plain or serrated.

S30V for main blade and 440-C for the smaller blade. It has a nice aluminum handle, not too heavy. Well disigned grip to the handle. Axis lock is nice too.

I don't see too many of these around and I'm not sure why except that they are not the Benchmade black and folks just don't think of a mutiple bladed Benchmade.

Thoughts?

I think its less popular for exactly the reason it's a good choice for EDC: it doesn't have that macho, high-speed low-drag, tactical look to it.

I've got a 921, a limited edition with D2 blade and pewter anodizing. It's a work of art that can *work*. Folded, it looks like a piece of art deco jewelry; even open, the semi-wharncliff blade doesn't look too threatening. And if that's still too aggro, the tiny lil' slipjoint blade will only scare the most timid of sheeple.

It's my favorite "dress up" EDC knife. I enthusiastically second your recommendation!

You know, I've actually been thinking about that one even before you guys recommended it My only hesistation is that I can't see when I would ever use the smaller blade, and I hate to have something and not use it. Oooo I know, I could use the smaller blade for envelopes. Anybody have a reason to not get this knife? I take it I shouldn't get the apparition though from what I've read, or do you all think the apparition is good too?
Thanks,
Richard

Are the blue handles that nice blue of the larger picture on the benchmade site (which is similar to how they are on 1sks) or are they the pale blue on the bottom of the benchmade site (which is the same color they are on crocblades)?
Thanks,
Richard

Speedfan, take a look at the Kershaw Nakamura. Specs are good, looks good too.

Here are a few candidates:

Spyderco Persian
Benchmade 941 series
CRKT Carson M16 Compact EDC
CRKT Carson M16 Titanium

Good luck,
Allen.

Are the handles on the persian shiny or dull? I've seen them look both ways in pictures. Also, the Osborne I like is the 940, but it's a little too mean looking for my purposes. However, what are my chances of being able to find a 940TI-01? Oh, and the 440 has got no clip, so it's no go.

What are your thoughts on the apparition handles? When I heard they were cheap plastic, I kinda got turned off.
