Alternatives to BM Apparition?

They're not "cheap" plastic. I'm certain they're perfectly good quality plastic. It's the fact that they are plastic, and shaped to look like something they're not (jigged kudu horn) that makes them feel cheap IMO. I'd rather they were made from micarta or something.

If you want a dressy knife, look at one of these:

Kershaw Nakamura. SanMai (420J outside layers, VG-10 core) blade, mokume bolsters, quince wood scales.

Or

Spyderco Kopa (Cocobolo handles pictured).

Just when I was about to order a 921 you come and tell me the plastic used in the apparition handles are a good plastic. Hmmm, decisions decisions. This is harder than it should be.

What are your thoughts on the apparition handles? When I heard they were cheap plastic, I kinda got turned off.
Like Planterz sez, they aren't cheap. Personally, I like the faux-kudu thang, it makes for a very secure grip; but the rest of the Apparition is so solid, that you expect the scales to feel likewise. On a lighter-weight knife, they'd be fine.

Looking at the scales on mine, the "kudu" pattern looks like it was CNC machined, at least originally. I have a suspicion that the scales were originally intended to be CNCed from micarta or G10, until they figured out how much more it would cost and switched to injection-molded scales instead. The retooling might explain why the Apparition was announced as a new model *last* year, but didn't show up on the street until recently.

I say get the Apparition, and tell anyone who asks that it really is some exotic African antelope horn. They won't know the difference, and I can see that you really do like the design. You could always get the real thing put on afterwards, when you have an extra $60-80. I'm thinking about getting one and having pearl scales put on.

Otherwise, the Kershaw Namamura looks way-cool!

Whoa, there is someone who could make those exact handles except out of kudu horn for $60-80? Either way the 921 has been bought and shipped...but I could always buy another knife at some point down the road.

Spyderco Lum Chinese folder.

Very pretty, would be good for food, comes in green or a nice blue.

440 has no clip. Either way, I already ordered a 921. I think my next knife will be an AFCK (or a more pissed off looking folder if I can find one) and I'll, I dunno, retire my kershaw avalanche

921 came this morning. This knife rocks. My only thought is that the axis lock should go further up on the blade.

The Axis lock is designed so that it will wear in and not wear out, ie. the more it is used, the further the lock bar will move in.

If however, your's is not locking up securely now, then that's a fault. You should send it back.

It locks fine, it's more of a mental thing, like how could I make this better even though it doesnt need to be.

Speedfan, you can't make it any better. An unworn lock bar/blade tang is better than worn ones.

Use it with the confidence of knowing that the Axis lock will not let you down even when the lock bar has taken some wear and tear.

The Wharncliff blade is the perfect design for cutting fruit I know that much, and the little one is perfect for envelopes, leaving my avalanche for boxes, automotive stuff, junk, abuse, etc. Speaking of which, does the AFCK open easily? Of course the 921 opens up superfast, but it has a thumbstud, not a thumbhole.

Yes, it opens very easily. After not a whole lot of use, I'm able to flick mine open, don't even need to use the hole if I don't want to. I usually don't flick it though, it's just fun for a change.

If you're thinking about getting the 806, I highly recommend the knife. It's one of my favorites. My favorite Benchmade is the 710.
