Friday morning I woke up early and discovered my watch was hanging by a thread. I had a needle in my Altoids tin PSK so I sat in my cave and fixed it after my cup of coffee.

Saturday morning, Renato showed me that his sneakers had gotten shredded on our climb to the top of the mountain the day before. We still had to hike out and I didn't want him to have a blowout on the way down. Between the PSK and the SAK we got it all back together.

I used the SAK (Vic Huntsman) alot on this trip, repairing the watch and sneakers, trimming bark cordage. I couldn't have done this trip with just the SAK but it sure did come in handy. Mac

Good pics! Nice to find that you can fix the problems if you have to, and nice to have it happen in a non-survival setting as a good reminder. A good needle and thread is worth it's weight on a trip, no doubt.

Spooky,

The rocks here will shred a pair of boots in no time. My jungle boots are almost worn to a nub. Can you imagine actually being lost in such a place and having your shoes fall apart? You can't even walk around camp barefoot here let alone walk out. Mac

Awesome! I love to see when gear actually gets used instead of all the "this is what I have in case..."

So, I take it that guy learned a lesson and will get some proper boots next time?
ETA: Just saw your post that you posted while I was typing...

If all else fails you could always duct tape your soles to your feet, lol.

very cool... i've had to use my needle and thread more than anything else in my PSK....:o

I bet your buddy is going to turn into a loyal PSK addict like the rest of us now :D.

Glad to see you made it in one piece, and that your kit actually got used intead of just there.

This was Renato's first time ever in the bush. Remember, these are city kids I take out there. Valcione had been out with me once before to do the basic course, he did very well. I agreed to take Renato principally because he is a great kid and he is in awesome shape (bike messenger) At times he had more "animo do que cerebro" (enthusiasm than brains). He wants a list of gear to buy.

Valcione is turning into a real survivor. He came up with a good solution for his bible getting wet...

Watch bands is something that i went through every other week! the last one i purchased was about eight years ago and when i went into the store looking through all the bands trying to find one that would last a little longer they were in my opinion all cheap made and overpriced! I couldn't find a single one that looked like it would hold up to my requirements. As i looked through them i thought about one of my heavy duty pistol belts at home that extra length to it and i remembered having my Gran pa's riveter from the 1800's and some old copper rivets with it, I went home and made a band with that riveter and from that thick heavy belt and even put a little compass on it! The compass lasted about two years but the band is still going strong! From time to time i treat it with leather treatment, but it was the best idea for replacing my watch band i ever had and also the most economical.
