Altoids survival candle container

Revamping my escape en evasion pack, as far as fire starting, what type of fire starting materials do you guys pack; I’m looking for stuff that can help me star a fire in wet jungle conditions.

I work all over the country, the terrain down here ranges from high forest areas, desert and jungle. We mostly move about in vehicle convoys, but at times must do our patrols on foot, when the terrain is bad. We do get in to tight spots out in the field. I will be posting the story of on survival situation latter on.

Al of my gear must fit in my Maxpediton backpack and I’m trying to keep it as light as possible, (if I’m going to need the pack, I will probably be on the run).

Interesting Nintendo piece Et, what's it for?

I use Doan magnesium rod, my country's wet enough.

Sounds like you might need some tinders ready. I do look out for tree epoxies (resins) and fungi which makes excellent firestarter.

I replaced all my little Nanos with Photon Freedoms. Found I never had to lose another head (makes it quite useless) and have adjustable output and all those other modes (some like them others do not). Just got the SAR signal mirror/knife combo. These are really nice and small.

Try adding a small bottle of hand sanitizer, it's multipurpose, just drop a generous amount on your tinder, and it burns blue.

Excellent idea.

That Nintendo controller is the lid for the tin, it’s the only one I could find to fit some of my stuff.

you might upgrade the Nano lite as Tixx commented... I was going to recommend a Fenix E01 with lithium and a lithium spare...do you have a good head light in your bag? you probably carry a multi tool, but if not, something like a Victorinox Farmer for the E&E kit

Resurrecting this thread because it's too cool to let die.

Edwood -

RE the candle tin - you can use the metal cup that a tea light comes in to make an ultralight stove. Add denatured alcohol and light. 3x these little stoves would put off a good amount of heat and boil water well. Here's a youtube video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4WSyfwGLug.

RE tinder - My favorite tinder is called Tinder Quik. It's small, lightweight, packs down well, floats and burns when wet. They light easily and burn for a couple minutes. You can definitely cram several into the cracks in an altoid kit. You can get giant bags of 100 for under $20 on eBay. Since you carry lighters (thumbs up!), pieces of bicycle inner tubes - AKA ranger bands - are also a good fire starter.

RE the E&E kit - You need some sort of container for water - a stainless one that you can use to boil water. And cash plus possibly some precious metals - it looks like there may be a couple coins in your photo. Interesting tidbit - In WWII, aviators carried a little barter kit with gold coins and jewelry to bribe their way home. Money talks, whether it's buying a meal or chartering transportation.

I just saw this thread today and the need for a medical/BOK section got my attention. Seems Les Snyder though already posted some good elements -

Edwood7... I've got old eyes.. so may not recognize a couple of trauma items in the first aid kit
self administering tourniquet like an SF tourniquet
compression bandage like an Israeli...for through and through.. 2 or one with the slider pad
hemostatic gauze like Quick Clot
petroleum gauze to seal a chest wound
syringe to irrigate wound....small hole in water bottle cap
nasal pharangeal airway tube for facial injury that interrupts breathing
stretch adhesive tape like Coban
Kerlix bandage and Kerlix gauze
betadine
possibly burn gel
heavy duty scissors like electrician scissors
to protect yourself.... nitrile gloves and hand sanitizer for blood borne pathogens

stay safe

Just some notes and additions:

- Get real medic shears. Lighter, could accommodate gloved hands better (really need to test it first beforehand) and could come in brighter colors for contrast/attention. Check out Rip Shears. Also have one of those detachable "telephone cord"-type retention lanyards to keep it during the rough-and-tumble times.

- Burn gel is ok is you could spare the space but I was advised by my old boss who taught TacMed to the troops to pack along a roll of saran wrap or the thin clingy film of plastic we always use in the kitchen. A BIG part of burn treatment is preventing infection and this is to minimize it while in the field or being "engaged".

- Don't know if it is applicable operational-wise, but I put small luminous beads from Catholic rosaries to my FAK for low-light situations. Get brightly colored tape (i.e. - bright neon-ish yellow) to label the kit and it's contents too. It's more for the other guy who may have use it on you.

- Lastly, some things to keep note of which were posted in this thread -

For another tinder carry option, try getting a large diameter plastic straw, cut it to length, then stuff it with cotton or steel wool. Then clamp the ends with pliers and seal with a lightertotally water proof just cut it open when you need it.

Very cool.. made few this weekend..... gonna check them out camping this weekend.... thanks for the idea
