hey all i have some 1/8in thick 2in wide flat stock i was thinking about using...any one have any experience with using aluminum for a knife...i would assume from my experiences that it wont hold an edge...I used the rest of the aluminum that i ordered for prop swords in my theatre.....i was wondering if a decent knife could be made using aluminum or should i just get innovative and creative and make a knife of two with a crazy idea or two in my mind that can be used for prop knives......normally i do make prop knives with the aluminum but i plan to get a lot more creative this time...

sry if its worded confusingly...

Pure aluminum is worthless for making a knife. Too soft. There are some harder alloys, with silicon and copper but they are also unsuitable for knives. That is why there are no aluminum knives. Titanium has some of the properties of aluminum and has an alloy suitable for knife making but it also has some disadvantages. Steel alloys still rule and have since the beginning of the iron age.

sounds like ill have to bust out my crazy concepts and make them into stage combat knives....woot!

I find it easier to work with steel. Aluminum tend to clog the band saw blade, belts, files... If you're just starting out it might frustrate you more than steel would.

It will be of no real use as a blade. I'd work with something that can be made to be useful.
