Hello there,

I've always wondered, is it really that bad to hit a splitting wedge with the poll of your axe?

I'm wondering because i want to try splitting a relatively long piece of wood and want to hammer in wedges to split the wood. i have a couple of fiskers splitting wedges lying around and wanted to give a go at it but didnt want to destroy my gransfor axes.

I could always grab the ol' mallet, but was just curious if hitting the wedge would kill the axe.

thanks guys,

JC

Depends on the axe I guess, I personally just use a sledge hammer, and I have been doing that for a couple of weeks now. My firewood pile is about as tall as me and 10 yards long so far.

thats basically what i'm trying to achieve. a stock pile of wood for summer bbq and back yard campfires.

also wanting to have a go at hewing logs and then splitting them into planks.

thanks for your input.

The Granfors axe head is hand forged. The only thing hardened is the edge(and part of the blade). The poll may be slightly hardened,I don't know for sure, but the eye is not. Striking steel wedges with it will distort the eye, loosen the handle, maybe ruin the axe--depending on how much and how hard you did it. I would definitely go for the mallet.
Now,what you can do with your axe,on those long splits,is make wooden wedges and insert them into the crack started by the steel wedge, and split the rest of the length.

yeah i guess i'll grab the ol' mallet with me. i just wanted to have to carry less stuff :D

+ 2 on Alex's note. If you have a hickory wegdge, even better. I had a roomate that usedthe back of my old kelly perfect axe to hit a wedge. he did it once.....ONCE

I scolded him as I showed him the dents it left on the back of the head.
