always wanted to ask: whats the deal with spydercos?

I read (OK - scanned) this and did not see blackhearted's list of production knives that are pleasing to the eye and yet still functional.

Individual taste is fine. Naturally, I like some better than others. Personally, I have lots and lots of Spyderco products, as well as some other manufacturers.

I just wondered what would be on the "good" list opposite the "bad" list with most of the Spyders in your opinion...

They're beautiful, just like my Glock is beautiful. If you don't think a black blade Spyderco Native is sexy then you need help. Form and function, Spyderco has it all.

I own a great many knives and no matter how many I try to rotate into the EDC schedule I always return to Spyderco. Again like my Glock they are simply everything you need and nothing you don't.

damn, ok - i admit that does look really sweet. i liked the native I before, but had no idea it came in the black. im usually not a fan of the 'tactical' black finishes on blades these days, but in this case it just seems to fit very nicely.
now all i need to do is find a fair price on one from a place that ships to canada and i may be on my way to being 'converted', heh. seems this thread has served to also change some other peoples viewpoints on them as well.

cheers,

To me Spydercos are Butt ugly , that said they make some of the best value for money users on the planet , the Delica, Endura and Native . They get a bit funky when they try to turn out a high end product . Things like the ATR absolutley bark !

Spyderco's are fugly. However, once you get on in your hand and use it, you'll see that the knife was designed to do a job with comfortable use. I was drawn to Spyderco after finally getting a fugly beater (an Endura with an intergral clip). I got other Enduras after future models showed refinements by the company (better steel, removable clip, slightly redesigned handles). To me, this says that the company cares about putting out good products. Also, the cost of Spyderco's makes them affordable to a poor man like myself. The knives are great for what use they may have been designed for with a huge care in improving production and a consideration in their prices. For the amount of money you spend on a Spydie, you a lot of bang for you buck. Get an Endura, or Native, or Military, or etc., and you'll have it for years. A safe bet no matter what you choose.

I quite like the design some of the high end knives. For instance, the UK Penknife, perhaps the most modern slipjoint in the world today, is really pretty. A very clear, functional design, clear lines, just a beautiful knife.

I actually find Spydies beautiful  I fell in love with the Caly Jr. at first sight. About the only knives I find better looking are ones designed by Ken Onion.

I'm sort of opposite of most people here. I've been looking to try an Axis lock for quite a while, but I really don't like the looks of Benchmades :(

I guess they sort of grow on you. I only have one, being poor, but it's been a reliable EDC for nearly a year, and it's a quality knife. Check their Centofante III, it's a middle-line knife as far as Spyderco goes, but it's actually kind of pretty, and the VG-10 is amazing.

why does it not suprise me that im getting negative rep points for this thread. just goes to show that some people can not tell an honest question and request for objective opinion from an 'attack' on their favorite brand.

Why are you attacking Spyderco then? Why is it that everytime someone replys in a positive manner to your posts, you come back with more negative comments.

Why don't you do like everyone else, if you don't like a knife, you make your comments on it, and move on? Not continually knock it. - Or, not say anything at all.

Personally, I think you are getting the responses you want, so you can keep the pot boiling.

are you being serious?
all throughout my posts in this thread i have been saying that spydercos are high quality and great value for the money, but that i never liked the look of them, and the purpose was to asking wether or not this grew on people or they just overloooked it. overall i think it went very well, with many honest opinions and a peaceful, constructive discussion. i even went and bought a native yesterday as a result of this thread.

theres a big difference between saying something like:
'the reason i havent bought one is because i think the way the blade narrows at the tang and the taper of the forward portion of the grip makes the delica look flimsy'.
and saying:
'the delica is flimsy'.

i have never 'knocked' them (subjective comments based on my aesthetic preference is not 'knocking' anything), and if you think i have been in this thread then a lesson in reading comprehension is in order.

Now I hate you guys! I've been trying to limit my knife buying for a while, & I don't really care for Spydercos. Then you &*&^%$'s had to mention the Persian so I looked it up. Now I have to buy one! You're all chipping in for my divorce! :D

LOL :D I'm like some of the others. I didn't like the looks of Spydies either. Then I saw a Persian on a passaround that I was too late to get in. So living in CO I went down to the Spydie outlet (which is shut down now BTW :grumpy: ) and paid a premium for one. That's one nice knife!

I used to think Spyderco had a lot of crazy designs to. Until I bought my first one. A delica. My reformed opinion = no other company out there offers the practically limitless functionality that is offered in the spyderco line. Theres no ridiculous claims about chopping cinder blocks and destroying cars with their knives. Just good knives for little money. I strongly believe that you can not find better deals than what you get in a spyderco. VG10 in a $45 knife is amazing, considering some people actually put VG10 above S30V, a steel you see in $400 knives. When my co-workers see me using this knife, and find out I payed $45 for it, they say it was a waste of money. But amonst all the bah'ing, I am always confident I bought one of the best knives you can get for under $50. No one will offer you so much knife for the money. Spydercos open, cut, and close. Leave "combat ready" and "tactical" with painted blades and cheap metal to the other companies.

Some Spyderco knives are a bit ugly, but some are simply elegant and beautiful.

How can anyone call the Bob Lum Chinese Folder ugly?
Or the Jess Horn?

Allen.

Oh, and did anyone else pay attention to Jeff Clark's first paragraph? I think we should all pitch in and get him some therapy :) I think now I'm gonna have nightmares about my delica coming to life and poking my eyes out. But I realized I miss another point. My first sharp knife was a Cold Steel Ti-lite. I thought it was incredibly sharp. Then I eventually got a BM42 and found out what sharpness truly was. Then, I bought what I thought to be the perfect EDC. A delica. Spyderco's redefine what sharpness is. And the Spyderedge is practically legendary.

lol, it took an entire page of responses for someone to finally notice that?
it was pretty trippy though, he has a point :)

nice controversy! - Spydies need to grow on you. And the function before looks philisophy is great. Can't wait for the Pikal - that one looks reaaally ugly, but functions very well! :) Designed to function, and not to look great.

might need to get me one of these also...this ones from a friend, he used it to cut aluminum tubings...handy that they put S30V in a relatively low-price FRN knife.

I find the styling of some of the Spydercos to be extremely nice. The Military, Paramilitary, Manix and Lum fixed blade all appeal to me asthetically. There are quite a few others that I think look okay, some that I don't care for and there are some that I think are butt ugly. This is the same with the lineups of all the manufacturers.

The debate over Spyderco's aesthetics is over.

If you don't find the szabofly awesome looking, I've got nothing left to say to you.

Despite my QC issues with Spyderco, I'm going to buy one. I don't care what it takes. Then the minifly or whatever is coming out. That'll be awesome.
