TW,
You had every right to complain about this imperfection. This was a big flaw in the overall scope of things and especially since you paid $575.00 for it.This flaw should not have happened even in a "user" knife and again, you had every reason to complain. I'm glad that the maker made it right, (and he should have!).
It brings up a good point though and that is, "What do you do with knives that aren't "users"? After 25 years of "collecting and accumilating" knives, I've grown tired of knives that you can't touch, much less use. In the broad world of collecting, what good is a knife that you are afraid to bring out and show your friends? They will get it "dirty" and you'll have to clean it AGAIN before you put it back in the safe or display case? Mind you, we're talking about KNIVES here! The most BASIC of using tools in the history of mankind!
Trust me, (and this includes ME), most knives nowadays ARE NOT USED! They are showcases and are not USED! You will get the common responses on this and other forums that they ARE but I guarantee you, thay are not! Most guys will brag that they have used their knives but the most they have done is that they have CARRIED them, NOT used them.
I'm all for keeping "collectible" knives but when are we going to cherish a using tool such as a knife that has been well kept? Oh sure, in using a knife you might scratch it or slightly gouge a scale. Is that all bad? No, but it will subtract 75% of the knife's value!
In the end, I would much rather know that Kit Carson, (the trapper AND the knife maker

), USED an example of a knife I have and it is is excellent shape as compared to the same example in MINT, UNTOUCHED condition! When it comes to knives, we really need to get our priorities straight!
