Got a 124 LE Stag and I am not happy with handle. Am I being too picky?

Where that groove goes into the butt. Is there an opening? Like you could stick a tooth pick or something in it?

I personally would not be happy with it.

I think that if you use it, that groove will fill up with blood and guts and be a pain in the ass to keep it clean. In addition, I think that it would be a good place to split.

I would have to agree with the rest. If they sealed up the ends where the groove meets the stag, then I would think it's ok, but if not then I'd send it back in for them to replace the stag.

I guess it would depend on what you're not happy about...those above seem to think the groove is the cause of your unhappiness...but since the cap is solid, I don't see anything to worry about...all stag is going to have "grooves" of some size in them...I would think cleaning up a 110 would be harder than this knife...

...My $.02...

I have just received a new 124LE myself. It is my third 124, I have an old one with black martica Handel and another with a wood Handel. I love my new 124LE because it has a stag Handel. However, what I don't like is that the Handel is to small for the knife!!!!! Look at the pic, this handle is the size of a 119, it's to small for this size of blade. The older 124 is a large knife and the handles are large and wide right down to the Butt. The 124LE looks like a giant with a pea size head or handle in this case, this small handle is a poor fit on this knife....IMO...... I don't have a digital camera to take pic's of the knives together so you can see what I'm ranting about. The knife is to large fit on my scanner.

As far as the grove in your stag handle, I like it!!! No two stag handles are the same, the more bumps and groves in the bark the better. If you intend to use it and get blood and gore on it, those bumps and groves give you a better grip any way....IMHO....

as the woner of an OLD (pre 70) 124 i feel the but cap and handle are two small also... is this a "marrage" or after market or buck factory? i like the stag on a 124 as scales so as to show the full tang....
hummm - unhappy? depends on the price you paid for it...
you are the judge of the value you got for it ....
is it for sale?

i agree with you about the handle being wrong i have one on order i havent received yet but i am already disappointed when i ordered i never even noticed the handle switch i assumed it would be the same as the older models so IMHO this is not a 124 but some crossbreed if they would have stuck with the old design it would have been an exceptional knife
as for the grooves and bumps i disagree i think it is a poor fit but i am one of the very few (if any maybe i am the one) who prefers a polished symetrical handle so stag is never my first choice but on this 124 the old handle with stag slabs would have been perfect just my personal preference

...I feel that in the design of a knife, particularly one like the 124, the symetry of the knife between the handle and the blade is most important. This one certainly doesn't appear to have the symetry I would want in a knife like this. Without a doubt the knife looks terribly unbalanced from what I can see. As to the Stag itself, "picky" is an extremely subjective term when it comes to natural materials like the Stag. My BCCI 110 came to me with handles I did not like at all, but not ever having owned a Stag handled knife before, perhaps I too was being too "picky". In any event, if the knife is not what you were expecting or you feel it may generate problems in the future if you should actually use it, make mention of that fact to Buck. Has anyone ever known Buck to turn it's back on a customer who is dissatisfied? They may be having "moving" pains from their move to Idaho, but unless you let them know there's a problem with something they can't fix it. Give 'em a chance at it...

Yep, send it in. I bought a custom 110 in stag and wasn't happy because of a couple of gaps between the liners and the scale material. Sent it in to Joe Houser, and Buck wound up sending me a new knife.

Stag, however, is a natural material, and is going to have wide variation in color, grain, etc.

B2B,

Can you post a pic of your 124LE in your case with the other 124's in your collection? When you receive it that is. This will be a good comparison for all to see. I also did not notice that the knife was not a slab side handle. But it is still a nice LE for my collection!:D

hello yes i will post a pic but by the couple i have seen in pics it looks like a huge difference from the old style which is like i say to me disapointing but as you point out still a very nice knife and almost a must have;)
i realized about an hour after i made that last post about this 124le that my klink 124 will also be this scaled down version i havent received it yet either but ill post pics for comparison
and if i really dont like them im sure theres someone around to take them off my hands;) :p ;) :p

bigfish44's is the first Buck 124 LE I've ever seen a photo of, and, yes, it struck me, too, how the handle seems to be mismatched to the blade. Even from the photo taken from a low angle, it appears that the top of the blade is about a quarter-inch above the top of the handle...but, maybe a photo from a lower angle is distorting it....

bigfish44, could you take another photo, from directly over the knife, so that it isn't a distorted view, comparing the blade and handle?

For me, the top of the handle and the top of the blade should line up pretty closely....

FYI: I just measured the differences between my early eighties 124 and the new 124LE that I recently got off ebay. the numbers are as follows: Handle length from back of guard to end of butt; Old = 4.94, New = 4.25. Guard length; Old = 2.625, New = 2.125. Guard width is about the same. Handle scale length; Old = 3.625, New = 3.00.

I'd post pix if only I new how.....Mike

Mike, if you'll send me the pictures in an e-mail, to geothorn@yahoo.com, I'll upload them to my web site and e-mail you the codes to post them, all ready for BladeForums, yourself.

I'm still hosting WilltheBarb's images of his Buck 300s. ;)

Thanks to geothorn here are the images of my old 124 next to the new 124LE.

Hope this helps.

Mike

Ah, I see now...Buck has changed the tang...it was a longer full tang, with attached R&L scales; now it's a short enclosed tang, with a [probably] pinned pommel... :grumpy:

I can understand your disappointment... :(
