Am I crazy EDCing an (inexpensive) limited edition knife?

Personally, if I like a model, I actually wait for sprint/LE/dealer exclusive. I wanted a PM2, got a m390 version, wanted a dragonfly, waited for the super blue version. And I use them both. We only live once and financially, it's nothing in the grand scheme. In 50-60 years, a 200$ knife isn't going to be the defining point of my life, so I might as well enjoy it. :)

So, recently, I snagged a new Kershaw Blur BDZ tanto...i love it, and it was a style i was really waiting for.
The problem is, i know it is supposed to be limited, and it is mentally unnerving to use what may be a collectors item. I know i can always try to grab another, but my question still stands.

In terms of use, i know the blade can take abuse, but the anno onmy other blur is already wearing, so i dont have high hopes for the anno on this lasting..

Your thoughts? Do you EDC a limited blade?

I would EDC it but if someone askes to borrow it, I'd have to decide based on the borrower.

I read an article several years ago about some old rich guy. Rockefeller, Vanderbilt? I can't seem remember who it was. I do remember reading that his accountant was asked in an interview how much money he left behind when he died. His reply was 'All of it'.

Like some of the others have said, use it and enjoy it. You certainly can't take it with you.

Use it as much as you like. Use it hard. When you go, someone else is going to get the knife and probably sell it or give it away. Enjoy it while you can.

Use it - life is too short. All mine are users, even the expensive ones.

Is it your knife, or is it something you bought to sell to someone else at a dubious return?

Especially when you are on the back side of 50.

I am envious, sir. Heck, I got married (again) when I was almost that age...and that was a (very) LONG Time ago. :)
It's nice to stick around, even if I am creaky all over...

And...to join the discussion, YES, carry the knife that you like the best...and can afford. It is rare to lose a knife that has a decent pocket-clip. I've never lost one with a clip, although I did lose a nice special-ground "work-knife" yrs ago when it apparently fell out of my pocket.
The price of your EDC is not important. It is a fun thing to carry a nice folder...that you can be happy with its appearance, delighted with the quality of its manufacture, and satisfied that it performs when needed.

I can't say I carry couple thousand bucks worth of knives ever. I can say that when I buy a knife it's for my personal use. The only problem is I don't have 300 pockets so some don't get much use.

Over time I too have come to realize that using your favorite knives on a daily basis is far more satisfying than storing a bunch of safe queens. Most of my friends would be horrified to know my 8 knife rotation of folders cost slightly over $2000. 2 of them are limited editions. Life is short, carry with pride.

I wouldn't worry about it, any worse comes to worst you could probably track down another one since it's not THAT limited. It is not like it would be that big of a financial loss either, its only what like $65 or so?

The amount some people spend on knives...man I just don't get it. I have a lot of nice things, and I appreciate them, but there are some things out there that are just so expensive for what they are that I can never imagine wanting to spend the kind of money they cost on them. Knives that cost $1000 or more? No thanks.

Not really familiar with Spyerco blades (gotta admit, the shapes and holes really dont do it for me), but i get the jist... it is actually reassuring to see the nice blades put to use. I am carrying my current fave in an old Gerber multitool pouch (fits it great), and will continue to carry it happily...

As it is, i have really fallen in love with the upcoming ZT 0620, but have problems justifying the cost for somebody like myself. I am a programmer, and work on a base. My knife use is limited to (mostly) personal cutting tasks.. but that blade looks so nice.

Holding a cool knife in your hands, opening it, putting it to use in whatever your cutting tasks may be, however small, is reason enough to justify owning a knife you really dig.

I was similarly worried about the cost on the 0560, as it was my biggest knife purchase to date at the time.
I don't regret a thing. I got a whole lotta knife for the money and I get a lot of personal satisfaction from carrying my Five Sixty.
Even just sitting at my boring office job, I find excuses to use it :P

Use it, just about everything is fixable.....besides, hard use patina looks great!

The irony, when i feared it collectability, is more the handle than the blade. I have already worn the annodizing on the corner of another one of my Blurs, so i know it won't hold out long (which really made me think that a handle with DLC instead of anno would be awesome....)

Madcat,
What other Blades do you have that you can use besides that one.??
Let me know as I might have a solution for you.^

I'd say carry and use it. If you want, you can even tear down 4 limited edition Blurs to make some FrankenBlurs. And then EDC those. ;)

The way I see it, the potential profit you could make keeping a LE knife pristine for future resale can likely be made some other way. On the other hand, once the LE's are out of circulation, your ability to get ahold of one to use may be more difficult than simply re-gaining that money via other means (work, other investments, etc.). So, unless your intent is to set up a display case to admire the pristine knives (nothing wrong with that either), put them to use!

Life is short. Enjoy your posessions. If your posessions become a burden (financial stress, fear of loss, or even physical bulk, etc.), change your ways, let go, lighten your load, move on. Even if they are the most artfully crafted unobtanium forged 1 of 1 diamond encrusted Faberge' eggs of the cutlery world, they are yours to use as you see fit, and, after all, just knives.

This should be an auto reply to these threads.
