After ooogling over knives which I can't afford (Household 6 aka CSM aka the wife) and being totally and completely enamored by what I have seen I have been seriously thinking about getting myself a forge. I love working steel, of course fire helps but I have been thinking about getting into knife making. I do need A LOT of direction however!! Suggested books??? Tools???

I appreciate it!

Yes you are crazy!
It seems to be contagious. First book: The 50 Dollar Knife Shop I think it is Wayne Goddard that wrote it, I don't have it yet but enough people I have talked to swear by it that it has to be a good thing. Jim Hrisoulas' Complete Bladesmith had a lot of useful information when I was trying to teach myself. Personally I like the 2 lb Centaur H133 straight pein and the Sears 2 1/2 lb cross pein hammers , and I have been lucky enough to buy and beg several anvils including 2 Peter Wright anvils that are in reasonable shape.

Good luck, and welcome to the asylum! :D

Run away while you still have money!
Seriously...Read Ron Reils website and build your own. This will do two things, Give you a much better understanding of how a forge works and they are very handy even if you don't forge blades.

It's too late. It's kind of like a virus. You get infected the very second that you hit the "Submit" button to start a thread here. I'm beginning to think that the source of the forging/knifemaking virus is coming out of our keyboards from this Forum! He's infected with the knifemaking/forging bug for sure. The only cure for it, is to stand over a really hot fire and swing a hammer until you have forearms that make the girls go wild.

Welcome to the disease Stefan!

Thank you,

If you're crazy then I guess we all are.

Everyday I look at these posts of people work and I am just in awe!!!!! I don't ever see myself getting to any of the makers level that I have seen here but I think it will be fun working steel outside of what I have been doing (just some small MIG and Oxy/Acet welding, I want a nice TIG but that is for when I win the lottery). I played around grinding some mild steel into a blade form but never did anything more then that (looked archaic on an old bench grinder).

My wife thinks I'm crazy since my hobbies include firearms, motorcycles, photography (picked that up on my deployment in Iraq, go figure?), small amounts of knives, tool collecting (the previous hobbies give me reasons to buy more tools:thumbup:) and now I want to start working metal.

Yep, I must be a little out there:D
