Am I CRAZY?!

I dunno how you guys can stand having all that stuff on you. It's not so much the weight that bothers me, but I hate having bulky stuff in my pockets. I keep it limited to some pens/pencils, my keys/Leatherman micra, and my wallet. Sometimes I will carry a folder too. I used to just carry money and cards loose in my pockets but it got messy. I do feel lost without a watch however.

Your better off than me,I carry a ontario marine radier bowie, leatherman wave, kabar folder with a survival kit.

Seems like you'd be ok with a SAK or a SAK multi-tool and dropping all the knives/tools. Less stuff, everything's all in one package.

The trick is packaging and distributing it so that you don't end up with bulk. Except for the pepper spray nothing that goes in my pockets is over 3/4" thick.

Never ask a bunch of knife nuts if you are nuts for carrying lots of knives and a gun...

As a part-time knife nut, let me assure you that unless you get attacked once or twice a week by alternating waves of polar bears (the gun), cardboard boxes (the mini-skirmish), other mall ninjas who drug and then try to disarm you (the necker), AND you live in an area that has frequent and unpredictable eclipses (the flashlight)- it is a little weird that you carry so many weapons.

And just think- if you are ever chased by one of the polar bears during one of the eclipses and you have to swim across a river, all that weight is going to drag you right to the bottom.

Dude...where do you guys live that you need 3+ knives and a gun on a daily basis, Beruit? Sure I work in an office, but I seriously can't see why you'd need half of what you guys carry.

What does "need" have to do with anything? I don't "need" a car or a computer, but life is both more convenient and more fun with than without.

You're seriously comparing the functionality of a knife to the fuctionality of a computer or car?

It's not that all that is necessarily a need; the weapon of course is for defense and some of the others may be used as such in a dire situation but the key word to remember is CONTINGENCY. Personally I don't want to get caught with my pants down (from all the weight  ) and not have what I may need. Sure, everything may not be implemented in one day, but all may be needed the next day. It's part of being PREPARED.

Take a look at the wilderness survival forum here at BF and you'll get somewhat of an idea if you don't already have one or watch that particular forum. Like I said, I would rather have heavy pants and a little too much gear for a while, then not have what I may need should a situation arise. Someone's signature here is, "By failing to prepare, you prepare to fail." Also "I'd rather have it and not need it, then need it and not have it." These, in my eyes, are words to live by.

You might also ask yourself the question, does a LEO "need" all the equipment he/she carries? I would say perhaps not, myself being military security, but it gives the officer levels of force, or CONTINGENCIES, to be used when the need arises. Again, you might ask, does an infantryman "need" all that is carried? Having been one myself, HELL NO! But it gives the soldier CONTINGENCIES and options as the situation dictates.

The same principle applies when I carry all that I do on, (minus the Springfield) and off duty. Options to be used as the situation may dictate.
At least that's how I justify it.

Just something to ponder... ;)

Being prepared is one thing, but what are you preparing for? Being prepared in an office situation isn't the same as being prepared in a military action. Soldiers need weapons, so they carry them and the equipment needed for said weapons. They don't need staplers and mouse pads (in the field), so they don't carry them. Sure youmight get attacked by the Taliban in the suburbs and need to defend the whole entire nation out of your pockets, but is it likey? No. "What if THE BIG one hits?" Then you'll probably be vaporized like the rest of us and won't need all that stuff. Carrying all that junk is like those people who try to eat just the right stuff and don't get any sun and only drink such-n-such water to prolong their lives that they never live their lives at all.

What's the difference between a "mall ninja" and some guy who carries 14 knives and 3 guns at all times "just in case"?

Well, I explained myself. There are situations where a folding knife just isn't a good idea (i.e. improvised prying or REALLY heavy cutting where you have to put a lot of pressure on the handle). I don't carry a gun because I'm not able to where I'm living. If I could carry a gun I might carry a small one, I'm just not sure. I don't know about y'all either but I don't carry weapons, I carry tools. Just as sure as a knife can be used as a weapon, a computer mouse and a stapler can be used as weapons as well. I don't personally see what you're getting at or all worked up about. Not your pant weight, or your burden to carry, so what's the big deal?

-Anthony

Oh, and the difference between a mall ninja and someone who carries multiple knives etc "just in case" tends to be that the person carrying all that stuff doesn't feel the need to advertise what he's carrying or why. Also, they tend to know why they're carrying it and what to do with the equipment they are carrying.

When you find someone like that be sure to let us know.

Amazing isn't it. Several hundred years ago you could have confronted a medieval knight, dressed in armor, carrying a sword and shield. With what you have in your pockets, you could have met him in combat, easily defeated him, stop to smoke a cigar, and ordered a pizza, all without breaking a sweat!:D
