got a factory made knife today. i cant remember the last time i did that. its a USN MK3 mod 0. it was a navy seal issue knife and i love how it looks. the blade is 440a i think. its a 440 i know that but dont know a b or c, any way to tell. im thinking about re heat treating it, what could i expect in edge retion gain. i woul like to make one like this but using CPM 154 or S3Ov.

If it is 440A, don't bother. The C content is too low to properly harden.

If it does not say "440C" it is definitely NOT 440C if all it says is 440 it's guaranteed junk.

If you like the look so much replicate the blade in ats or S30V and replace it in the knife.

This is another of the military knives I really like. Does your's have the curved clip or the straight clip?

I really like the curved clip version. I like the coke bottle handle But it seems like it would be better flat on top. Someone mentioned re-working the bevels, They are about a half inch wide? Kinda like an AK knife bayonet?
This knife will never be a great cutter.

I wouldn't bother to go to the expense and time reworking and re heat treating the blade. I would buy a good piece of steel and start from scratch.

its a straight clip, which is good because i have heard the the curven ones have a lot of problems breaking. i think this knife would be sweet done in a good steel with like a blasted micarta handle. maybe i can work one up after i get all my orders done. i got it for self defence sence my wife hates guns and wont let one in the house.

I would sharpen it thin and see if it gave me any durability problems before I would consider messing with the heat treat. If seemed just a little too soft or if it didn't take as fine an edge as I liked I might experiment with a cryo treatment.

dont tell her that then she will hate knives;). i would rather die from being shot than from a knife

The straight clip no doubt is stronger, But the curved clip is just plain wicked. Thanks for reminding me about this one. Now I have 2 military knives I must reproduce. Right now I am working on this

Made by Robert Klass for the german military It has crapy steel, (420) a slipery hard plastic injection molded handle and a noisy sheath. Mine will have a 1084 steel blade .250 hollow ground and green canvas micarta handle.

Mine has the pre unification markings on the sheath. I always thought this would make a really good field knife because of the blade, which is much like the Green river Dadley.

Now I must make the navy MK III mod0 I think I have some A2 in the shop or perhaps D2

ya im going to have to make it over in say s30v or maybe cpm10v and take the hardness down to like 60 to increase the toughtness. man it would be pricy. i glad some one else likes this knife. i love the sheath and how well it holds the knife.
