Am I just super unlucky with Benchmade?

Hey BF,

I ordered a BM523 about 2 weeks ago and it came with blade play even with the pivot cranked down to where the knife would not be able to deploy, and I exchanged it for another one. This one has the same problems albeit slightly better, but blade play is still there, just not as ridiculous.

So I'm asking, am I just extremely unlucky or what? And if there are any fixes or options what are there? I really don't want to pay another 8$ for return shipping lol.

Thanks

I have 2 full sized Grips and they are both perfect. Sorry about your luck, I'd try one more time but that's just me. Third time is a charm they say:D

Can't say I'm in your boat either, but I'd sure call BM and request they pay for the shipping or something this time. I'm sure they'll do something to keep you satisfied. They're good folks there.

I have a griptilian, Adamas, triage and a 300 flipper. All came with a bit of blade play. I was able to get the Adamas, triage and griptilian solid with the blade still being easy to deploy. I got the 300 down to an ever so slight up and down play which I could get out but I leave it so I am still able use the flipper without flicking my wrist.

Take that for what's its worth. Still great knives and the 300, despite the bit of play, is still one of my favorite knives.if you're unable to get out the blade play and are unhappy it about I wouldn't hesitate to give BM a call. Their warranty is one of the reason to buy a BM.

M actually with you on that one. The couple Grips I've had have given me issues as such. Though, perhaps I'm being too picky...

Just remember that blade play doesn't intend a week lock as in other lock types. My Adamas has slight up and down play, but that lock will handle more then literally eight times that of a liner lock with let's say zero play. So keep that in mind, that axis lock puts you light years ahead of other system, and if it's at the cost of a very little play, so be it. Well worth it

I have about 10 benchmade only, but Adamas is the only one with every so slight play. But I trust this knife the most.

I have had only one BM that wasn't faulty. My current Mini Grip is perfect in every way, but my full Grips (drop and sheeps) had some issues, namely an uncomfortable about of axis lock bar wiggle, and they had a little lateral play. My other mini grip had the same lock bar wiggle and came dull as a brick. My large Bone Collector came with a broken spring and terrible lock bar wiggle, along with being very dull.

At this point it isn't being unlucky, it is plainly shotty QC.

I see I'm not the only one with this shoddy QC problem.
I like Benchmades but I'm now feeling they need to step up their A game or my money will be going to Spyderco (which I never liked until recently)

I have bought many knives from makers such as ZT, Emerson, ER, Protech, Boker, Spyderco and etc me BM is the only company I've had multiple returns/problems :(

I think I just have no luck with them as many do

Don't know if I want to know who this Boner company is...

Back on topic, I have had some big QC issues with Emerson knives too. Not had a single one that opened smoothly and easily, and they all have really sticky locks. ZT and Kershaw have pretty much always done me right, though, regardless of CoO.

I was thinking the same thing. Not telling what kind of weird issues those knives could have. But imagine the interesting threads...

My Mini grip, Dad's Mini grip and Mini Presidio all have a little side to side wiggle.
But it's not really a big deal since there's no vertical play.
586 is solid in any direction though.

I have two axis locks the 581 Barrage and 950 Rift, the 581 came with no blade play but after 1 1/2 year of use; no side to side, but slight vertical play, the 950 is still rock solid after 2 months of use. Also have a 790 Subrosa; Benchmade serviced me half way around the world, free of charge, so contact them with your complaint and they will take care of you. My experience with BM's customer service has been exemplary. Just for comparison KAI will take care of my ZT561 only if I paid for shipping and parts, since I am not willing to pay USD 77 (I know Thailand's international parcel is way too expensive) to send my knife back to where I purchase for an exchange. I thoroughly understand that it is KAI's policy, but Benchmade has the same policy. So contact Benchmade, they will go that extra mile to satisfy you.

I had a ton of issues with my Griptilian, but my Adamas has been great. Even did some chopping with it yesterday and no play developed.
I was really mad with my Griptilian. So much so that I almost refused to buy Benchmade again.
But, my Adamas is now my favorite knife.

Dont write them off yet.
They redeemed themselves in my eyes.

Benchmade hasn't offered very many new knives that really tickled my fancy, so I haven't bought but 3 in the last couple years....2 were Grips, and both came with uneven grinds. nothing that caused me to send them back, they are obviously users, but it did annoy me.

No issues with my Grip or Adamas, had them for a few months now. Have used my Grip on a daily basis as my EDC and the Adamas a couple times in the woods. So far I only have reason to buy more BM's...
