My R.A.K came in today. Nice looking knife overall I like it. However, there is some chipping in the handle region (covered over by the epoxy), some stain on the tip (yes I know it is 1095) and around the tip the epoxy has a gouge in it. I wasn't expecting these blemishes. Should I send it back or go on with it?

Honestly I think you should go chop the crap out of some firewood in your back yard . . then hack off a few branches on some wayward trees . . then stab a fence post or two . . . then sharpen the edge to a mirror finish.

You'll then officially have a "user" and will lose the urge to send it back.

I would imagine Justin would fix any concerns you have ASAP as he's a good guy to deal with. On the other hand-and in line with the other response-most folks seem to be "holders" not "users". All fine and good but I'd go nuts having a blade not being used. Waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy too much emphasis is placed on steels and issues that have nothing to do with real world carry. If you bought a Ranger(and you're not one of the Green Beret/S.E.A.L et al fantasy guys stuck in their office cubicle) then you probably looked into the company line and reputation and went for something you could use. In that field use of any kind will show on a knife, why worry? Is an R.A.K a knife that's useful or practical for you? Then USE it.....the best knife is the one you have in your hand when you need a knife and a survival knife is whatever opens your paycheck envelope. An R.A.K is a military oriented design and I'm assuming you're not military, so there was some original justification for it's purchase.Go with those parameters.~Airborne

True, I bought it for camping, rafting, hunting. I'm not military, but after researching the company, they have a great reputation. I'll have to see what I can get into with it. Do ranger knives not come in a box?

What do you mean by Epoxy? Are you talking about the coating?

If you have an issue with the fit and finish, contact Justin at Ranger knives, you will be taken care of.

If you had some pics of the knife and problem areas, it would be nice for us;)

i had a small problem with the finish on my rd7 and he took care of it asap . i actually call him from time to time . he called me today to ask how i liked the new finish and mods to the rd7 and that really means alot from the sole maker /owner imo. might try to schedule a backpacking trip this summer with him. good guy that stands behind his work 100 % . just call him and hell work it out , hell probably tell you what he told me , "go beat the crap out of it and when youre ready send it back and ill fix it " so my advice to you is go use and abuse your knife and give justin a call when you get a chance. best to ya.

That makes me feel good. My plan was to send a picture of the chips to Justin and ask if he thinks it could be a potential problem. If not, I'm good as the knife has a great warrant. I wouldn't worry about if the chipped area if it wasn't at the top of the arc, right where all the stress will be if I chop with the knife.

Sorry, but this illustrates how hard it is to communicate without common terminology.

What and where is the "arc"? It seems to be in the "handle region."

What do you mean by "chips"? Have parts of the steel been displaced by impacts?

Chopping with a knife potentially creates several different stresses in different sections of the blade."

Sorry to hear that you weren't 100% satisfied with the blade when it came to you also sorry that I haven't responded sooner. Here is my advice take the blade out beat the crap out of it then contact me and send it in for a "re-fit". I can recoat the blade thin the edge and take care of any hot spot areas that you have. How does that sound. Once again sorry about the blade and if there is anything I can do just let me know.

  Damn, that is jaw dropping customer service, I am impressed!

Wow... Instructed to beat the crap out of it THEN send it back. I have often wondered if Ranger knives are as tuff as their reputation around here implies. Sounds like they are. :)

Anyone scrolled will tell ya..."Mission first".~Airborne

LOL Thanks for the kind words guys.

Actually I am just trying to kill two birds with one stone here. I would have to strip all the old coating off anyway so I might as well let the customer do some of the work and wear it off. Makes my job that much easier when it gets to me. ;)

Thanks again all for the kind words!!!!!

toldya so! now go and clobber a tree or something . good onya jansen ritter for picking a ranger, you wont be disapointed.

RangerJD; Thanks for the info about the knife and warranty. I'll be using the knife soon, if it ever gets to the point that it needs to be returned, you'll see it. Two questions: What do you recommend for sharpening? There is an area in the middle of the blade that is dull (if looking at the edge, you can see the flat spot). This is the only spot that needs touched up. I normally use a lansky.

For anyone: Second, how do I post pics?

Jansen

Ranger knives are users. As Justin said, beat it up and send it in later for refinishing. By the way, Justin can put a scary edge on a knife, I have the scar to prove it:eek:

of course Justin has a habit of trying different blade materials. He sent me one Idid not expect. It was kinda dissapointing since it was made of some experimental stuff called F. L. O. A. M. But to his credit, he did not know it wouldn't work.:jerkit:
