Am I not smart enough for these new smart phones?

I don't get it. I upgraded to the latest greatest HTC EVO Shift smartphone recently. Now, I'll admit to not being an owner's manual reader, but I should still be able to figure the gol durn thing out, shouldn't I? I thought the whole purpose of these phones, is so that you can get on the internet just about anywhere, right? As an example, the wife is constantly on her new Android type phone while we're driving down the road through the countryside in the middle of nowhere; she's on facebook, checking her emails, watching the news, etc... But, I try to get online sitting in a resturant or at my friggin desk at work and it tells me "web page not available" "check to make sure your device has a signal and data connection"

Smart phones is not smart enough for you. It used to be, hobos spit on you and little children would run up and punch you in the groin. Now you have to pay for the privilege of being abused by an inanimate object!

(I think your wife must have messed up your phone to make you crazy. :D)

Seriously, are the two of you on the same network? if you are, it may be time to glance through the manual. Unfortunately, there are dead zones, you may be hitting a few of them.

Don't feel bad man, I don't like the do-it-all digital touch screen tech either.

Check the settings for your cellular connection. Somehow, my HTC decided to make it where the phone connection could not be used for data, so phone calls and txt messages worked, but the phone could not access the Intarwebs. I turned the data settings back on and it was fine.

Did you get a data plan with the phone? If you don't have a data plan then you will be restrained to using wi-fi to use internet on the phone. Or maybe you are just hitting some dead spots.

If you do have a data plan, checking to make sure the settings are configured properly will probably work, if not take it back to the store and double check with them.

To make sure your wi-fi is turned on: press home (house button) > menu > settings > wireless & networks > scroll down and select the 4G check box to turn 4G on. It should auto-scan and auto connect.

DOHHHH! With all the bazillions of settings on this phone, it looks like I missed one(critcal one, it turns out). I had all the right buttons turned on EXCEPT the one named "Mobile Network". Dohhh! It works now.

never liked those "smart" phones...
basic is what i like, i have computers for the internet, and a simple phone for talking and text messages.
I understand the added functionality, convenience and their use, but i just don't like them :D
Doesn't mean they don't have to be tough though

Swing that one by the lanyard overhead and launch it into a brick wall? Maybe off a tall bridge or a nice mountain ridge? ;)

Just an FYI, the HTC Droid incredible really is incredible. I won't even begin to list all the other devices mine has made obsolete.

Yeah the same thing happened to my phone...here is what I figured out. Go the the home screen and press menu. Then press settings and click "wireless and networks". Towards tht bottom make sure "mobile network" has a green check next to it.

I'm not a fan of smart phones, I didn't upgrade this time, and I went with a basic phone. I've got a lab top and desk top for the internet!

Also sometimes the phone will just need a good old fashioned reset, you can have all the setting turned on that need to be turned on but it just won't work until you give it a reset

I understand how technology can become overwhelming, but I love my Blackberry Bold 9700. I work from home, and my Blackberry allows me to escape from the house and still appear to be at home. Throw in google maps, email, internet (albeit rudimentary, poor quality), and Nutnfancy videos, and its good stuff. I can even watch my home tv channels using Slingbox. Its the last piece of technology I would give up.

I hear you. I have always had crap phones and a few months ago I bought the HTC Evo. It took some getting used to because the phone really is smarter than me. But I gotta tell you, I have never had more fun or been more impressed with a phone before. It connects almost anywhere. We went camping last weekend out at Joe Pool and I did get some spotty reception there but overall I am extremely happy with it. I had originally gone out to get the shift but I really fell for the evo with its larger screen. What helped me quite a bit was to go over to Android Forums. Great group of folks over there and a lot of helpful information. I feel like I have a computer in my hand wherever I go.
