I was trying to come up with a design variation on an axe to post on the JK forum when another idea came into my head !

I started thinking along the lines of an Ulu/Knife hybrid that could could be lashed between a split stick and used as an improvised axe ! TOPS knives makes the ATAX which is a similar tool but I have never been happy with that design or their price !!!!

This one would have a paracord wrapped handle which we would do ourselves ( keeping costs down ) the paracord could then be used to lash it between a split stick when improvising an axe !

As it does have a point of sorts at one end it could also be lashed to a longer stick and used as a weapon against any pedatory animals.

Yes you are, but so are the rest of us! What fun would it be if we were normal?

I personally think that you're crazy, BUT I thought the same thing when I saw the first picture of your TTSK. Then when I saw the work in progress pics, it seemed to make sense to me, and while I'm not a huge fan of the aesthetics (or lack thereof) of the TTSK, I see that it would be very useful. Hopefully this ends the same way.

Personally if I wanted an Ulu that could be made into an axe/hatchet, I would get a CS Norse Hawk. But that's just me.

I would really rather just carry an axe or hatchet and a knife, and this is what I usually do.

I'm not sure what the scale of your sketch is, but I like the shape and the concept. Sort of a DIY-handle. Don't know how it'll perform until you actually bang it out, eh? I suppose you'll have to make it now, in the interest of science!

Looks a bit like:

Different top to the head but you get the idea. If it is a good enough design for Mike then you must be in good company.

kinda looks like something from Mineral mountain knife works
http://www.mineralmountain.com/axes.htm,

Tops also has there outfitters ax which is designed to used as a ulu also.

kinda side note for Pit, Do you think that would be legal in Canada, I am not sure about the Atax but most things that go over your knickels are a no no, what do you think??

It looks very interesting. I think it could work well if done right. Not sure I personally would be on the bandwagon before it was tested (as I was on the TTSK, as I love that design) but if it performs, I think it would be really cool.

I see, I thought you were after it for use as a hatchet in the more traditional way. Looks pretty nice! I would love to see the finished product. Keep us posted!
Yea that Dozier looks pretty nice! I just wish I had the $450 to get one!

Are you nuts? Is this a trick question?
Looks cool to me.

I have an Uluchet. http://www2.silverstar.com/turnermfg/

For me, it is more of a hunter's tool than a wood hatchet. The edge is great for use on game and by extending the handle, you can break bone with it. It chops wood OK but not nearly as well as a GB Mini.

So far as i understand it this would fall to the discretion of the officer who was checking out the item. If he thinks its purpose is as a weapon you'd never see it again. but if it's a tool then you're safe. the laws are vague at best. it all boils down to the officer's percieved INTENT for carrying a given piece of sharpened steel.
axe, ulu, hatchet, machete, ANY fixed blade is legal carry in canada. only two exceptions:
1-push daggers
2-"Brass Knuckles" and any similar device consisting of a band of metal with
BASICALLY any sharpened piece of metal is illegal and legal, if it's a tool it's safe, if it's percieved to be weapon it's gone. it's vague but i'll take that over some of the laws i've seen around the globe any day of the week. some municipal authorities do have their own additions to the rulebook however so it's best to check locally if it's ever going to be in question (which i can't imagine this is.) personally i've never had any trouble carrying a blade of any kind my whole life in canada.
So long as you keep that thing out of malls, shouldn't be a problem :D
sorry for hijacking the thread.

I was going to reply to J.Wade but you have done it for me and made a much better job than I could !
The tool is basically a modified Ulu so should be fine, like you say waving it around in a bar or mall would be a different story !:D
