Helllo forum members,
Newbie here:)
I'm pretty new to knife collecting but I know a bit about it. Basically, I'd like to know if I'm off to a good start with my knife choices! I have quite a few more knives that I'm scouting out; mainly the SOG Flash I&II, SOG Aegis, and the Cold Steel Recon 1.

Kershaw Volt II - ~$24
SOG Salute FF-11 - ~$29
Buck Vantage Avid - ~$32

Am I starting off well? Making the right purchase for the right price?:O Help a newbie out!

Thanks!

Looks like you're starting off pretty good.

I'd agree with Seanifred, check out Spyderco. Delica and Endura are excellent starting points. Course I'm prejudiced, sort of a Spydie junkie.

You may get some flack about SOG. Lot of folks have issues with them, more so the folders that the fixed blades.
Personally, I have quite a few of their folders and think they are pretty decent IF you pay the right price. They are usually discounted pretty heavily.

Kershaw makes great products ranging from real bargains to the more pricey Zero Tolerances (great knives).

Get the Recon 1. Toughest lock to date.

If you are going for SOG folders, try and go for the upper range, such as the Visionary II, Vulcan and the like. I like the Aegis, but get the store to check for centering before you buy, as there has been some difficulty there. The Recon 1 is a definite winner for a tough as nails knife.

I checked out the knives you guys have been rec-ing me. Awesome:O

Forgot to mention I'm just a teen so don't have lots of money to spend for this hobby, which explains the lower-level folders I've been buying. haha

Also look at the Cold Steel Spartan.

If you can only afford lower level knives- and there's nothing wrong with that either- look at the Ontario Rat-1 and the Utilitac. The Rat-1 can usually be had for $25-30 and is a real beast for the money. Not a fancy beast, but a beast none the less.

You need to get full flat grind Delica, just choose the color of the handle. Probably one of the best starting knives in this price range. Should be around $50. Also save money for sharpmaker. And enjoy the cutting.

The Ontario Rat 1 was the other option instead of the SOG Salute FF-11, but I liked the style/structure of the Salute more so stuck with that:P I am hoping to get my hands on a Spydie soon. Would the Byrd Cara Cara be a good "cheaper" replica of the Endura? Or should I just save up and go for the Endura or Delica?

I'm going to recommend the Tenacious, great one for not a lot of cash. I do like the way the cara cara looks.

None are really my cup of tea....but all that really matters is if you like what you bought!!

You may want to consider if you would like to be a collector or accumulator or user or some combination. Sounds like you may be the "accumulator" type, which is cool. Nothing wrong with that.

Yeah, I get what you're saying. I'm using the Volt II & Buck Avid as my EDC's and my Salute I put the Salute somewhere in a compartment in my car when I go out or on my person when on night hikes/walks. I am hoping to go for higher-end collectibles, but with the amount of money I can put into this hobby (along with my other expensive aquarium keeping hobby), that might have to wait:(

Anyway you look at it, I'm an accumulator also. I love my Spydies, although have other brands as well.
I usually EDC my old BM 690, which has some scratches on the blade from yrs ago when I though I would sharpen it on a paper wheel...and failed miserably.
I would suggest...if you're "accumulating"...that you try to buy those "popular" knives that you also like, and will sometime be able to dispose of for some profit. And realize that as soon as you take the knife out of the box and carry it, that it loses value. Just like driving a new car out of the showroom. Enjoy!

Yeah San Jose area. Haha I recently got out of the tropical fish scene (nano fish like neons, etc.) and into the shrimp keeping and plant growing scene. I was gonna put out $100 specifically to that aquarium hobby with my graduation money, but I spent it all on knives. Haha So it looks like I'm gonna have to push that back a bit longer:P

lol nice, i just recently got out of fish keeping... my pg&e bill was upwards $200-$300 each month and i couldnt do it anymore and slowly broke down tanks. i havnt been to king aquarium in yearsss, miss the huge display tank infront :). knife keeping/collecting can be equally as expensive if not more than planted tanks... enjoy :D

Its a tough call...."more knives" or "better knives"! If you have the patience to save your pennies for a while, I'd second the Delica suggestions. It's a great knife...not terribly expensive...and a step above a "starter" knife.

Though, if you'd like to accumulate more, get an Opinel! Or a couple of them. Phenomenal low priced cutters. You will be shocked at how well they cut things. Or, people rave about Rough Rider slipjoint pocket knives. Dirt cheap and good.
