Am I on the right track?

I use a grinding magnet to hold the blade and do the distal taper holding the blade vertical (tip up usually) on the flat platen (I have a 10" glass platen). I grind the whole taper at one time that way. Work the two sides alternately to keep the tip even. I then flatten the tang and carry that up to the ricasso to get the sides even at the ricasso.

If I grind mine from hand, is it is best to grind horizontally from ricasso to tip and continue switching sides until both sides are even, or complete one side then do the other?

You can do it by hand, but a magnet is easier to hold securely and also doesn't get as hot. Any bar magnet will work. HF has them for a few bucks.

The ones from the knife supply sites have a wooden block, but aren't any different otherwise.
Oh ok, I actually have a magnet similar to the top one. Thanks
