Am I The Only Fan of the C-60 Ayoob model??

OK I do realize that it's an old school model and the last Sprint Run was even about 7 to 8 years ago. But I still maintain that the C-60 Ayoob model is one of the top 3 best folder models that Spyderco ever produced. The original 2003 era C-60 Ayoob model was even available in Spyderedge>> they never made the Sprint Run available in SE which really disappointed me greatly. I still carry my G-10, Sprint Run Ayoob every now and then because my M390 Military is my main EDC and has been for almost 2 & 1/2 years now and I don't see anything soon putting it into retirement. But if they were to do another Sprint Run of the C-60 Ayoob in one of the newer, super blade steels it would immediately take over the position.

About 5 years ago there were still several guys here at BF that still loved the C-60 Ayoob model and spoke of it often. Now I hardly ever hear anyone even mention it. I challenge any of you newcomer Spyderco fan's to check it out doing an internet search on it. There are even two really nice Youtube videos on it as well. The ergonomics on that C-60 were absolutely near perfect in my opinion. So are there any other C-60 Ayoob fans out there? If so I would like to hear from you all. Pictures and testimonies would be very welcome.

I can't think of one use to a crazy negative angled bladed knife, bro - at all.

It’s a fighting knife first and foremost.

I have huge respect for Ayoob and his little pistol/heron head shaped knife. The man and the knife are absolute legends and it was Spydercos willingness to develop these specialized fighting blades that first impressed me so much and in many ways got me into folding knives in the first place.

That said the Ayoob knife doesn’t match up with a fighting style I ever practiced with. However I did buy multiples of the Spyderco P’kal which is among my favourite knives I own and my favourite “concealable fighting folder.”

Yes :) For self-defense, I'd rather own a P'Kal, Matriarch or Harpy and do.

What application do you carry it for that make its "ergonomics on that C-60 were absolutely near perfect"?

It's a handy knife. I am a huge fan of pointy sharp Persian style blades for daily use and just about anything else.

If I had a wish it would be a wish that it had a compression lock instead of a back lock so it would snap open faster.

Wonder if it's on the Blade HQ to do list in M4 & Jade G-10.

Actually I no longer regard it as one of my "self defense" blades. I too like the Matriarch SE and I still consider my C-46 Lum Tanto Folder for a nice SD blade.

To answer the question of "ergonomics" I've found it to be a very versatile EDC folder because of it's streamlined blade design. The C-60 and the JD Smith both impressed me from that standpoint. The C-60 in SE had better penetrating ability than any other Spyderedged unit I ever owned. The belly of the knife truly made it a great "skinner" as I used one two deer seasons back to back and I had compliments from the other guys who were also impressed with it's versatile field uses.

I would not only love to see a new Sprint Run with one of the supersteels but I would also like a handle that is just a bit thicker>> however the handle on the G-10 Sprint was a great improvement. I guess it's fair to say that I liked all of my C-60s for a lot of reasons.

Have to say I like the thin handle. Despite the offbeat shape it vanished in a pocket. Probably good IWB too.

Funky blade angle.

I've always liked the blade, just not the angle. The high hollow grind is sexy :)

Actually the unconventional blade angle you all tend to not like is one of the features that actually appeals to me. It's almost like I'm holding a top quality handgun while cutting. It truly did make a great skinner on that one hunting trip like I mentioned earlier. And it's one blade where I believe that the hollow grind is an advantage>> because normally I tend to like a full flat grind better than most but with the convex belly and an angle already in a cutting/slicing model I do believe adds a lot of advantages.

This is kind of strange because I had a thread similar to this one over at Spyderco.com about a year ago and I had comments just the opposite of what you fellows are saying. It did have moderate to good success on the sales charts and it's always had a steady cult following of sorts. Because there is a core group of us at the Spyderco.com forum who have always raved about it. It was in my opinion probably their overall best folder ever in Spyderedge>> cutting in SE just seems almost effortless the times I've used it. I would love to see a new Sprint Run in one of the newer/better blade steels>> but a G-10 handle would be satisfactory to me unless a lot of guys would like to see a Carbon Fiber handle. I would go for either one.

My problem with the handle-blade angle is not that it does not have utility in some applications, but it is limiting in others. A more neutral angle, with a handle shaped to accomodate the curve of a hand, but otherwise let the user use the knife at whatever angle the job requires, is a more versatile knife. The PPT is a good example, and even the GBs, with only a slight curve to the handle, are too. I don't like more angle than what the Military has. I like the Tuff handle and blade a lot, EXCEPT for the angle.

I love this knife, I prefer the og alumite version for its thinness. The increased thickness and weight of the sprint run made it almost a different knife though, more of an Ayoob 2.0 to me. This design is just so excellent, the handle repositions your hand into a better, more natural position for deep cuts and just really nails it. But I guess if you're doing a whittling motion it's not very helpful. It's probably fair to label this an SD knife which can serve well for general EDC tasks, other than sharpening pencils. The thing I like least about the knife, at least initially, is the way it looks like a steak knife with an eye, but after using it I came to appreciate the looks as just a damn fine design. You have to embrace saber grip though.

Also though, if you choke up on it and put your thumb on the back of the blade, past the spyderhole hump, it works like there's no negative blade angle. If you have a whittlin' emergency.

It has one serious flaw for me. The tip down carry position causes the thumb ramp to snag the top of my pocket. Many times it jams it immovably. Big issue for a SD design. If not for that one thing it's excellent.

A sprint release with the new style button compression lock would be of great interest to me. Provided the new Smock model button compression lock does well in the wild. Hoping it does. As a lefty it looks damn near perfect.

Well "fonedork" I agree with about everything you said with the exception of liking the original "almite" version better. No I actually thought the G-10 handled Sprint Run was a vast improvement myself and for the life of me I can't figure why they didnt' offer it in SE>> at least make 15% to 20% of them in SE because almost every C-60 fan I know really raves about this one in Spyderedge.

Oh yes without a doubt it's got a well earned SD designation on it for sure. And this is coming from a VG-10 fan for the most part>> but a new Sprint Run in a newer/better blade steel would just be divine IMO. There comes a time to move up and that time is now.

After modding this CS and comparing it with my moded military I was just thinking how the military reminds me of an Ayoob, due to the handle angle. It is plenty useful for general knife tasks, but Duo1.jpg it is really impressive how that angle lines the blade up with the wrist in a perfect neutral position for getting stabby!
