Am I the only guy that uses a pocket knife at the dinner table?

Benchmade Onslaught is the knife that I knew would be my camping knife, it reminds me of a fixed blade but compact to fit in the pocket. It has had cheese and salami cutting duty lately. It will make it to the woods this summer.

A-1 steak sauce is hard on the blade. Disclored my Buck Bantam some what and I read the ingreds: Orange Peels, Raisins and other weird stuff!

My least expensive EDC blade is worth more than any knife in my kitchen drawer. The better cutlery deserves the personal protection of my pocket.

I have used my pocket knife when given plastic utensils at BBQs or when there is only a butter knife. I can use it without getting anything in the pivot, just cut as deep as you can with the blade you have which is usually enough. Don't just stab and jam your knife into your food. I can also cut without hacking into the plate. A sharp knife will cut easily down to just above the plate and then you can pull the food apart the last little bit angling the blade if you have to, to cut at an angle and finish the job.

I used to go to a monthly get together of guys a lot of them contractors called the good ol boys. No women except the Hooters girls they would bring in to bartend the open and well stocked bar. Even there I would get weird looks and comments from guys as I was eating prime rib or some other rare hunk of meat. You would think they would know the value of a pocket knife. Guess we are a strange lot indeed using the right tool for the job at hand instead of struggling with the limited resources provided.

I don't use it at the dinner table, but I do use my EDC usually every day that I take lunch to work. My current EDC is a Gerber 500 I got free with a pair of Danner boots from Cabela's over 10 years ago.

I use my knives for food all the time. I try not to buy prepped meals for lunch while I'm working (expensive), so my knives make my sandwiches each day. When I DO go to a restaurant, I'll use my knife if the one they supply is dull. At a bar, I'll use my own every time. Their sh!t is usually dirty, and always dull. Even at home in the kitchen, where I have a really nice set of kitchen knives, I'll often use whatever is in my pocket at the time. It's just quicker and comes more naturally than reaching for the knife block.

I'm almost 40... people remind me of this whenever they see me eat at home with my camping utensils.
So... am I really that weird?
If the bladeforum people say I'm unique, then I'll know I might have an issue.

Probably not, but that doesn't mean that it is ok. =)

At work I'll use a pocket knife to cut steak or pork.We have a barbeque at least once a week there.

I like Traditional knives mainly. I use both folding and fixed as food prep knives a lot, it's everyday use after all. I also use a knife at table for cheese, slicing salami or fruits, silverware can't cope with those tasks. The other thing is, people often take a (positive) interest in an old fashioned looking bone handled pocket knife.

I use my edc Atlantic Salt for just about all food prep and while eating.

I once used a Benchmade Nimravus tanto (not a folder though) to take apart a lobster at a dining hall at my old school. Other people had to line up for some server to break theirs apart with a mallet.

At least it was easy to clean afterwards.

You are not alone. I do not even ask for a knife when I go out, I know I will enjoy my dinning experience more with my own knife.

When I was in my apartment at college, I had no good steak knives. My mom bought me a pair but they were made of some really cheap steel that couldn't take a good edge.

I pretty much alternated between my Izula and UKPK for dinner time for six months. No complaints here. :D

Whatever knife I have will be used for whatever I need it for at the time. Last time, I used my D-2 Spyderco Para-Military to cut my grandson's chicken sandwich in half in a fast food restaurant. I wiped the blade with a paper napkin and returned it to my pocket. One of the county sheriffs at the table next to me saw me do it but didn't say a thing.
