Am I the only guy who prefers the smaller knives?

I tell them small knives are like toy breed dogs,

That pretty much sums up the whole small is politically correct attitude for me. I grew up with little slipjoints and was happy when better things came along.

I think the general progression of knife addiction transitions from "get the biggest knife possible" at first towards "get a reasonably sized knife that fits my specific needs." That said, after owning knives for a few years, I've shifted my interest towards smaller knives.

...small for me also, just the blade length though 3" and below. that being said I do like some purchase real estate on my small handles, perhaps an oxymoron, but I just haven't been too attracted to small and skinny...the thinnest I'll go is probably around a sebenza's profile...

Big fan of small knives here. I don't like EDC'ing anything with a blade over 3.5" or a weight over 3 ounces. I have a few large knives (Ka-Bar, CS Spartan, CS Ti-Lite), but they never get real pocket time.

For a locking/modern knife, having a four finger handle is important (I wear XL gloves), so I don't usually go for knives with blades less than a dash under 3", since smaller ones end up with really short handles. The Small Seb's handle was too short for me.

Now for traditionals, I like em even smaller. The biggest Traditional I carry is a Rough Rider Barlow with a 2.5" Clip Blade, and I normally go for my Peanut or Tiny Toothpick. I should have a Sway Back Jack soon, which is another small knife. I find stockmans, trappers, and even a dogleg jack too large for a traditional.

I think a big part of the reason I like smaller knives, is because I carry a lot of EDC items. This has tended to make me carry small things when I can. I use a Countycomm Split Pea lighter, a tiny Egear flashlight, a Fisher Bullet Space pen, and a small traditional everywhere I go, and often add in a Doug Ritter Mini-grip, or BM 13960 Osborne. Don't usually have much room for a large knife.

As an aside, for some reason I like huge wallets...just ordered a Saddleback Large bi-fold.

When traveling and not knowing all the laws for legal blade length. I carry my "Axis Mouse". I made this out of a full sized Presidio with a messed up blade.
I cut the knife in half, made some new scales and added some standoffs. This gives me a 1 15/16" blade with an axis lock all on a stout frame. Here's some pics and a link to the original thread.

I carry a Yellow CV Case Peanut in my change pocket every day and it gets used more than anything else.

In talking about what our dad's and grand-dad's carried and used , of course most of those knives were smaller. I inherited my grandpa's ( my mom's dad ) edc slipjoint. all three blades are near worn down , he used it for everything. Way different from these days.

As for me - I like knives. Size is usually not a factor unless I need it to be.

For EDC utility, I am now a small knife guy. Spyderco Delica. It does everything I need. Yes, I even abuse it from time to time. VG-10 may be my new favorite steel.

I have always been into large folders (3.75-6" blade), but now I'm just starting to realize that smaller knives are usually just as good, if not better. And sheeple-friendly, don't forget that. I can't recall a time when I did anything with one of my large folders that I couldn't have done with my Spyderco Bug (1" blade). In fact, I use the bug on my keychain more than anything else!

Well I do carry a Tenacious everyday but the real workhorse is one of my slipjoints I rotate through on a daily basis and all are under three inches closed length. Just used one to drill a hole in a plastic lid for my daughters science experiment tonight. I couldn't make it through the day without one of them.

I’ve carried a Jr. Stockman all my life. It’s a great splinter picker and precision tool. Opens boxes, cuts thread; cleans corrosion from car battery terminals and mud from waffle stomper boots. I have specialized uses for all three blades. Alas, Jackknife is a better salesman for his beloved peanut than I am for the small stockman.

I also carry something with a bigger handle, for heavy work. Three and a half inches closed is my minimum. Four inches is better, but less pocketable. If I have to use my knife for fire or shelter, I want a knife I can use. This two knife system is my compromise.

Most things you use a knife for, a short knife will do it. Most things, but not all. Since I carry a big handle, I’m glad to have the larger blade. My Jr. Stockman can’t carve a cantaloupe, or a submarine sandwich, or a round of summer sausage.
