Am I The Only One Who Can't Stand Thumb Studs?

James,

Please accept my apology. I didn't check the left hand column to see if you were a new user - I should have - and I wasn't trying to be snarky. What I posted were failed attempts at humor - trying to lighten the mood and make you or someone else smile. Lots of people in the world and some on this forum take themselves far too seriously and don't smile enough.

Again, I apologize that what I intended as humor instead came across as rudeness.

IRL, you would have been able to tell from my tone of voice and facial expression how 'serious' I was... and I would have been able to tell from yours that I should buzz off and say "I'm sorry, I was kidding around."
Thank you. I do appreciate you reaching out to apologize. And I'm not sure your humor failed. Several users liked it, so you made some smile at least. But I'm glad you understand how that came across to me as my first impression. Honestly, I didn't even mind it too much until unwise I saw unwise fool's comment. Maybe I should have realized his username wasn't a joke. I'm sorry I let this set the tone for this entire thread, and I shouldn't have jumped on those guys for making fun of "deploy." I hope they see this and understand where I was at when I did so. And I would have felt bad about knocking your teeth out (humor) and I might have even said I was sorry. :) In any event, I do feel better about this forum since you explained, so it does matter.

I didn't assume it was about me. I wasn't offended or thin skinned. I just don't like negativity, man. I had already seen too many toxic posts, and I was just kinda at the end of my rope. It wasn't even about you, actually. It's fine man. Let's not spend any more time or negative energy on it. I'm just disheartened by the toxicity I saw when I was excited about participating in some civil discourse. Just look at the first few posts on this thread. I almost just deleted the bookmark when I saw how nasty people were. Nice welcome.

Hi James, welcome to BF.

May I suggest you slow down a little, read the room a bit more. People here are not being toxic, they're just engaging in the usual style of banter when a subject is raised.

Becoming familiar with this place will help avoid misunderstandings.

That alleged humor you just posted wasn't humorous BTW.

LOL! Welcome to the forum, James. It's better to mellow out here. Some guys will mess around a little. Most don't mean anything bad. And some are touchy about some things. Plus, sarcasm doesn't always come across very well, and I am the worst at it.
I always try to assume that someone is being sarcastic or messing around. Stay out of Whine & Cheese because it gets pretty rough in there sometimes. :)

Well, thanks for the welcome. We clearly have different ideas of humor though. I wasn't attempting to make you laugh. Just lighten the mood. We can disagree, but I'm sticking with it. I don't see it hurting. And really, my humor or lack thereof is what you got from my reply? Ok.

I don't know, someone who throws "toxic" around so quickly is obviously easily triggered.

I think the title of the thread has prompted some to be a bit 'snarky' if you will. Basically implying thumb studs are ridiculous (can't stand) when some of us think they're probably the best method of deploying a blade (I was going to use that word in my 1st post but it seemed to have riled you up a bit, but that's what I've always called it, technically).

If you can handle all the toxic waste around here you might actually end up enjoying it (the forums) and you will learn. 1st thing you learned is there are some snarky dudes, but we're all a little snarky once in a while eh? You say you have thick skin, maybe it'll get a little thicker hanging around here ;)

I wouldn't be so quick to judge, heck we're all having a bad year :D

I do not share the original poster's disdain of thumb studs. Being primarily a user of slipjoint and lockback traditional knives, I don't have many knives equipped with them in the first place. Two of those are flippers and the studs can't really be used to open the blades anyway.

They make using a pinch grip difficult, they make sharpening challenging

These were the only two functional issues reported by the OP.

I have never really considered using a pinch grip with pocket knives. Kitchen knives, yes, I do that all the time. Just to see, I tried it with some of my thumbstud-equipped knives. Sure enough, Benchmade Griptilian's thumb-studs make a pinch grip somewhat challenging. ZT 0566, which is a flipper with blade stops - no problem. Same with a Kershaw Leek. Mainly because the studs are hard up against the handle when open, so they don't get in the way.

For kitchen knives, since I do often use a pinch-grip, I am more picky about handle shapes and bolster designs when choosing a kitchen knife. So I understand why, if you like to hold a knife like that, the placement of thumb-studs could be an issue. Never been an issue for me with pocket folders, though.

Sharpening: Yes, I have noticed that I have to change the angle (not the edge angle, but the angle at which I hold the knife relative to the stone. I.e., if normally I would hold the blade so that the handle was pointing away from the stone at a 90 degree angle, I might have to adjust that a little bit so that the studs don't contact the stone. Otherwise they would act as a built-in angle guide. So I have to angle the blade a bit so the studs trail along past the stone edge. Really only affects it when you are trying to get the heel near the choil, and only if your edge sharpening angle is shallower than the elevation of the studs.

So I can see why that would be an annoyance. But is one I can easily enough work around, so it really doesn't bother me that much.

His third point was aesthetics, which I won't try to argue one way or another because it is subjective. Most of my modern knives are fairly utilitarian in design, so it's not like there was a lot of beauty to detract from in the first place.

And I would have felt bad about knocking your teeth out (humor) and I might have even said I was sorry. :)
Allow me to knock the teeth out of this thread (no humor), we're done here.

May I suggest you consider the advice below.
