That chuckles when you see a video by "survival experts" talking about how idiotic it is to risk breaking your knife, batoning wood? Just saw one where the guy said that no knife makers recommend doing it and I'm just here thinking "Jerry basically dares you to try to break one of his knives.". Lol!

Dude, Clamp...When my uncle came out to visit me last summer I pulled out the DTBM and started batoning some fire wood whilst we were cooking some meat on the Ugly Drum Smoker. He watched me at first Chuckled, and said " You don't know how to use your knives " LOL. All I could do was shake my head and say to myself....YUP, you are not ready to put your new ErgoBM to use yet young padawan. We had fun batoning the firewood and I think by the end of the session he got things a little better...but we never used the ErgoBM. We are going to beat that mistress silly when I go camping with him though. It's about time he learned what real survival knives can do LoL! :"P.

I think a lot of youtube and wordpress experts just repeat what they've heard other youtube and wordpress experts say. These ideas are basically "survival memes" that just get recycled amongst people without serious experience. I think of that stuff as entertainment not advice.

Most the so called experts are using off the shelf or box store knives... if you go into the the woods or a jungle with a $50 chinese stainless shrade camp knife there wont be much left after like 1-2 days.... a busse, or a miller bros are pretty much damn near unkillable.

Bear Grylls did use a decent knife once before he started promoting mass produced knives: http://www.bayleyknife.com/site/index.aspx

From the site you linked:
The handle: Material: G10 a high-Tec reinforced plastic; the finish is lightly textured and very resilient utilizing a full tang construction.

I don't know how confident I would be in a manufacturer who describes G-10 as a "High-Tec reinforced Plastic"

Personally I would first use my hawk, but if I didn’t have one, I have no qualms about baton with my FFBM. Can do a lot more with good steel than with cheapo stuff

I think it's a fine way to get dry wood for kindling. Far safer than watching some of thes morons swing a hatchet with no accuracy. I don't just mean the youtubers, also teenagers we often take camping. They need to learn to use an axe properly but I see nothing wrong with batoning for the last 20 years. Never once have I broken a knife that way.
