Am I the only one.....

I'm pretty new to fixed blades and extremely new to Busse, but I don't understand where this idea of batoning being bad is coming from...
Also this is the second time I've heard of the idea of using a rock as a baton?! Wh... who does that??
I was on a canoeing trip with an acquaintance who, upon seeing me making kindling, busted out a wrench and started whacking on his coated gerber. I caught a piece of the spine with my face before I pleaded with him to stop. Same guy, different trip, took a hatchet (also gerber) to the foot within 15 minutes of arriving at the site of his 3 day bachelor camping trip. I need new friends...

Baton ing has been around at least as long as Bowie knives, I reckon. The controversy is like a religious or an ethnic one it seems. I’ve never heard anyone say not to baton with infi, though, just from people who only carry axes, and use their knives for food prep. Different culture I guess. Some people like big trucks and fast women, others like big women and fast cars!

i dont baton with axes because of the eye

ive never had a knife that i didnt baton with though. No matter how big or small, good steel or bad steel.

It is not only about the tool but also about the proper technique. I can baton with a mora without breaking it. But it is much more fun with the CGFBM :) :)

Survival Lily did it with a laminated knife, so it must be fine! I wonder if it would be any safer to give this guy an axe, though?

Thank you for your comment! I don't watch any youtubers but both that video and its creator were really entertaining. It was really humbling to hear her earnest lamentations on knife durability being a much more hardcore user than I will ever be. I honestly feel like I've gained perspective about batoning with a stone. Living in a place with no lack of trees, I somehow had never even considered that there may be a situation where a tree limb (while being the preferred tool) may not be readily available or even hard enough to be useful.

As to the gentleman in question (Sorry if you ever see this Greg!!!), I'll just chock it up youthful exuberance. They make for great memories and stories to share. He's since married with a mortgage and a job on the north slope, so an axe may be a safe choice now ;)

last camp trip i gave a buddy my thick cut chophouse to baton with, i told him it was OK to use a rock as the baton. the knife had no issues going through hardwood. i wasn't worried one bit about the knife breaking

Using a rock to baton would work in a pinch but it isn’t as safe, efficient or easy as using a baton. If there isn’t enough wood to make a baton, there probably isn’t enough wood to make kindling either, though. I’ve seen people use framing hammers, mallets, and even the hammer edge of a tomahawk.
