Am I the only one...

After I got a Vic one hand trekker, which has a hole as well, I started to enjoy their designs much more. They are a "form follows function" design, which is fine with me; it also creates an easily recognizable knife brand. Never bought one, but looking into them more and more.

Ginger AND Maryann.

. . . at the same time. :foot: Lord, I 'pologize fer that, and bless all the pygmies in New Guinea.

To the OP: In all seriousness, no one is to be denigrated for choosing not to buy a Spyderco. For myself, I have a hard time getting around the hole, functional as it is, b/c I just can't get past the "it looks like a bird" thing.

Quality choices abound. It's only the people who somehow try to trash Sal or Spyderco as a company or the quality of the knives who stoke the wrath of the Spyderconistas. No one who has ever held or used one, if they know much of anything about knives, will deny that most of their models are functional, ergonomic and a good value for the dollar.

I do agree that the quality and durability of spyderco knives is awesome, but I just am really not a huge fan of the look!

They are an acquired taste to a degree, though I don't care for some of the designs. Overall, I've grown to really like them...to the point right now where they are my favorite factory knife.

Quality and durability can be very attractive.

I doubt that you couldnt find one spydie that you d like! Keep looking! They are wonderful knives! Check out a CF Kopa! Tell me thats not a good looking knife!

True; for me, that one Spydie was the Poliwog--looks like an otherworld cross-breeding between a hard use folder, a vicious bird w/a short beak, and a bulldog. In other words, much uglier and less elegant than the average Spyderco. It was so ugly, I fell in love w/its looks. Since we're talking Hollywood here, it's the Charles Bronson of the Spyderco lineup.

And of course, if you're willing to spend more $$, some of the custom collaborations look pretty cool.

After shoving it in a box for some years and playing with knives that fit my hand better, i took out my Endura 4 today. Then i looked closely at the area where the lock engages the blade and i saw that the lock only goes in like 1½ to 2 mm into the blade. I then tried a spine whack on the side of my table. It failed real quick.
I still like how it looks though.

You do know you are supposed to cut with the other side right?

Ginger AND Maryann.
... and at the same time!

And that's kinda the point (no pun intended)... I like numerous Spyderco's:

  • from the smallish Walker CF ZDP-189 (very light and very sharp, carries well in bottom of pants pocket and is sheeple friendly)
  • to the Military (biggish, not the most comfortable in pocket, and with an inefficient blade-to-handle ratio, but a good user)
  • to the Century Starmate Terzuola (a fine knife)
  • and the efficient, mid-sized Sage
But I like some Benchmades, some Kershaws, some ZT's, Chris Reeve's, and customs... I like Ginger AND Maryann and want them all. They all have a place.

Buy and sell and trade until your collection reflects your needs, perceived and real.

i saw Angelina Jolie work a bali-song and i instantly thought she was the hottest woman in hollywood. form function, and damn is she hot

as for spydies? i think MOST of their models are hideous. however, were the handle on the military shorter, i'd think it'd be a very attractive knife. and the persian is beautiful as is. some knives, the hole works for, others not so much.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

There are some Spyderco designs that I like and some I don't like, its just my preference. I put off getting a Spyderco for along time because i just didn't find one that was pleasing to my eye. I saw the CF Sage and said "That's the one!" So I ordered the CF Sage along with a Tenacious(for a beater/loaner) and a Bug (just for fun) and haven't regretted it.

The Dragonfly also caught my eye. I have a G10 now. I am also thinking about the CF Native (I like FFG).

Lint? It's amazing what a tiny bit of lint at the interface can do to render a lockback's lockup ineffective.

What do you mean by "inefficient blade to handle ratio?" I know what you mean, but why do you find it inefficient? I personally love the handle on a military as it allows me to get purchase with my entire hand. I mean no snark by this post, just merely picking your brain to gain insight.:)
