I just received a new Benchmade 527 with uneven grind. I can't decided if I'm being too picky or if I should do something about. I'm a little disappointed, since its the first Benchmade I've bought brand new. If it was your knife what would you do ?

Depends on how badly uneven it is. If its just a tiny bit off I would just let it pass.

Hi Jpalmer1988 -

If it bothers you to see it, then send it back and get a replacement.

I have heard very good things about Benchmade Customer Service.

It does sound like it will bother you, so just get it taken care of and don't fret about it.

I know it sucks to get something that you have looked forward to and it is not what you expected.

I see what you are talking about, and I am sure BM will make it right for you.

best regards -

My first Benchmade knife was about as sharp as a butter knife(yes, I'm exagerating a bit) So I decided to sharpen it myself. It's really good now. I've heard that Benchmade isn't as sharp as Spyderco or Kershaw out of the box...just my opinion

To me, any flaw that doesn't impair function isn't a reason to have a knife repaired, and any flaw that does is a reason to send it back.

Honestly I can't tell how bad it is from the pictures vs. what it's supposed to look like. But if you're dissatisfied, then contact Benchmade.

The thumbstud looks centered on one side and off-centered on the other.

That grind is pretty uneven. I would send it back. My view is that if it's something I can address as an end user, like uneven bevel or sharpness, I don't send back. This isn't something you can fix.

What would I do? Why, regrind it of course. Very easily done if you have a WorkSharp knife sharpener. Piece of cake. BTW, I've reground just about all my knives, putting a convex edge on them with the WS is so simple, and quick... Unless it's a safe queen, and thankfully I don't really have any of those. Once a blade's friggin sharp... it's much better, IMHO. But then, I don't have any pieces I'm planning on selling any time soon; having too much fun with them!

I went ahead and emailed Benchmade to see what they say. Hopefully they'll take care of it! Good thing I had a spare repair form laying around.

Don't count on a response to email, you're much better off calling them. They are super nice and helpful on the phone.

Getting a response via email is something differennt. Frequently they get either lost or ignored.
I've sent several emails and never gotten a single response.

How does that pass inspection? Sheesh

Something I've wondered with several BMs I've received that had obvious problems.
I finally decided their quality control is seriously lacking or non-existent, which is why I've lost interest in any BM I can't actually handle before buying.
