Am I wrong to be pissed?

I've had a lot of good experiences on this and other forums, I've even "met" some people online that I now consider friends. But I had an experience recently that just leaves me shaking my head, and I needed to vent.

I posted a knife for sale late last night, so I didn't expect any responses. But, within minutes of posting, I get this e-mail: "I'll take it!!!!!! Tell me I'm not too late? Thanks"

So, I send the guy an e-mail telling him he can have it and he can Paypal me or send a MO. Then I get another e-mail from him, asking some questions. Then another asking for pics. Finally, after I answered the questions and sent a link to another pic, he tells me that he's going to bed, but that he'll Paypal me in the morning. Oddly, every e-mail asked for my Paypal address, even though it is in the post and in every e-mail I sent him.

I then wrap up the knife and get it ready to mail at 1:00 in the morning. I was just going to check my mail this morning to make sure he Paypal'ed me before going to the Post Office. Then I see that he sent me an e-mail saying that he changed his mind. WTF? What does "I'll take it" mean?

I ALMOST edited all my posts to show the knife as sold, and I ALMOST bought another knife on the strength of this guy's initial e-mail. What would have been worse is I could've turned down some legitimate offers because this guy's first e-mail was so positive.

Bottom line, I didn't lose any money, but this still bugs me. The one time I did something similar, I felt bad and turned around and bought the knife anyway, even though I didn't have the $$ to spare. So, should I be pissed, or just shake my head and let it go?

I've unfortunately done this a couple times myself, mostly in cases where I'd made some assumption about the item in question which was proven false after further confirmation.

I've also had this done to me more than a few times, and it's seriously frustrating (especially if you've waited a while for the sale!), but I really don't think there's much to be done about it, especially in cases where the buyer has a legit reason. Just be wary of future deals with the individual.

However, I've never packed up a knife until the payment was in. I could see where you could be pissed. Especially after packing it at one ay-em.

You have a right to be pissed, but it seems it's the nature of the beast so to speak.I lost a couple potential buyers because something similar happend to me,but what can you do but put him on the never deal with again list?Sorry this happend to you.

Just be thankful the guy didn't lie about sending payment, only to cough up a week later "my wife just drove into the neighbors house and now I need to repair my car". Keep your sense of humor and enjoy the variety of excuses.

I'd like to know who it was as I've had it happen a few times lately as well. If you're not comfortable posting it,,Please e-mail me if you don't mind.

Thanks,
Phillip

My "favorite" deal which didn't go down involved my knife and someone else's knife. Won't say what they were other than they were both made in central Florida.:) We exchange 5 or 6 e-mails in the course of one evening. He wants more $ plus my knife and I am balking since they sell for the same amount from the shop. He agrees to it and tells me he will e-mail me the next day. I can smell a brushoff coming up. Sure enough, the next evening I have an e-mail stating that since he already had a Model 1 with the 8" blade, he didn't want to trade for my Model 1 with the 7" blade. That sort of irks me since a) he already knew he owned a 1-8" the evening before and b) why do the e-mail dance if you weren't interested in the first place? Obviously he was hoping I would cough up $40 and my knife for the one I was trading for, even though I had already indicated in my first e-mail I was not willing to do so. Two days later the knife I was going to trade for is sold. Guess he did find the buyer he wanted.

Folks, sales on the internet are somewhat like junk mail. For every buyer there are X number of tire kickers or people who make counter-offers in the hopes that you REALLY don't want the price you put on something. Like Keith said, just let it go. I try not to sell things and when I do, I don't take it personally when the leg humpers show up with the counter-offers. It is part of the nature of doing business on the internet.

Edited for spelling, not content.

I say post a name at least Klesk. you have to keep people aware- thats what were all here for, to look out for one another. unless there was a discrepancy on your part-???- you did nothing wrong, nada, zip- zippo.

Tell us who it is.Maybe some of these sort of thing will stop if a few names are posted.

I agree. If I did that, I'd expect my name to be posted.

With that said, I HAVE done that. But in my case, the guy wanted to delay the deal for six weeks, and didn't tell me that until three weeks worth of "I'll send it next weekend"s had passed.

If there is a reason for it thats to be understood but just to say I will take it and them ask 40 questions just to end up saying sorry I changed my mind is differant.

Ross, if this is the Clark your talking about, I think you may be over-reacting a bit. If I'm reading things correctly, only about ten hours elapsed between your original "for sale" post and your post here. Yeah, saying "I'll take it" and then not taking is poor form in my book too, but at least, by any reasonable standard, he was quick about it. I'd call this one worth no more than two shakes of the head and a muttered "dumbass" on the way to the fridge for a cold one, but then again I'm an easygoing kind of guy.

Thanks for allowing me to vent. As I said in my first post, I didn't lose any money so I don't want to post the guy's name. I know it's a fine line, as posting his name may save one or more of you some grief in the future, but I don't think that the offense was serious enough to warrant splashing his name all over the forum.

To The Deacon: true, only a few hours had elapsed, but in my mind, this makes it worse in some respects. I put the knife up for sale, then bam! I get a buyer saying the magic words. I was so happy that I didn't have to check my e-mail every day to find out if I sold the knife or not that, as mentioned earlier, I wrapped the knife up for shipment at 1:00 AM. But, as you and other pointed out, all this is worth is a shake of my head, and then moving on.

Thanks again to everyone for listening and sympathizing - that's why I hang out here. :D

Ross, hope you can understand that thinking of you in the warm Hawaiian sun while I'm freezing my nads off in the sub-zero weather we New Yorkers have been blessed with for the past few days made me a tad less sympathetic to your plight than I might have been otherwise. And to you guys in Alaska, Canada, and northern Minnesota, yeah, I know, only wusses complain when it's "only" -5, so, I admit it, I'm a wuss. Venting is definitely good sometimes, and, IMHO, you did it the right way for something like this, without naming names. We can all hope that your buyer has seen this thread, realized that he got off pretty light here, and learned his lesson.
