I’m always on the lookout for good prices on things I need. After my last post on hammers I started looking for another one. If you have looked around you know “blacksmith” hammers are anywhere from $150-$200 with some as high as $300. Well we where at the local feed/farm store called north 40 and I noticed a new hammer hanging up. I looked it over and put it back down and went home. I could not stop thinking about it so the next week I went back and bought it. The brand is mustad and it’s made in Austria. I have not done much with it besides pull the stickers off and get it ready for burning off the lacker on the handle. But it handles very nicely and has a nice long handle which I like. The price was $69 out the door. So if your wanting a quality hammer in a decent weight I would give it a try. It’s 2lb 5oz with a flat and rounding face. It’s also not dressed to badly. Needs alittle work on the edge of the flat but that’s about it. I tested the hardness and it’s sitting in the upper 45-50hrc range. I will be getting some quality time with it tomarow and I will let you know more.

looks good
I've also used expensive custom bladesmith hammers and settled on the Vaughn which is available at McMaster Carr
Ball peen with hickory handle in the weight you want is about $25 and the style puts the head forward sort of like a dogshead hammer.

Yeah the other hammer in the pic is my up to this point favorite hammer. Reshaped the face to be a rounding hammer.
