Bought a ZDP-189 Spyderco Stretch from Amazon for about $100 with 'free shipping.' When I looked at my receipt, I saw that they charged me $12.00 for shipping because I hadn't changed the preferences on my "buy it now" options, which default to "2 day shipping." This is kind of sleazy on Amazon's part, to advertise free shipping, then charge for shipping unless you are savvy enough to manipulate your account settings.

The good part is that they ship quickly, and refunded the $12 as soon as I complained.

As a Amazon Prime customer of about four years I have no complaints. Like you, there have been a couple of flubs, but they always fixed it fair and fast. The world would be a far better place if all companies operated with Amazon's ethics.

Amen.

As a Prime member, I find many times a non-prime item listed cheaper and shipped just as fast. Their shipping isn't as fast as it used to be on many recent orders.

You do have to dig around on Amazon for the best deals. It's been well worth it for me and the OP did get a refund when he contacted them.

I just got an e-mail that Prime is increasing to $99.00 with my renewal. still a good deal for me.

I have no complaints at all about Amazon's shipping (Prime member here). The only time they ever let me down was on several items ordered this past December which UPS managed to change from 2-day to 7-day shipping. Amazon sent several gift cards in recompense which I converted to an Endura 4 post-haste. Considering my heavy usage and number of orders I place in a given month, I'm happy even at the higher Prime cost.

Just read an news article saying that Amazon was forcing the increase in individual prime product costs to cover the shipping of prime items, so being a prime member basically means that we're paying double the costs for shipping. It just so happened that the next day I received an email that they're raising the price to 99 bucks in 2015. My prime membership will not be renewed.
