I love amazon

We do most of our shopping there. They have good return policy, the website is secure, etc etc

However when it come to knives, I am not lucky at all, with the knives I am buying from them.

First it was a Spyderco Salt H1 Dull as a ...... (fill in the blank)
I had to return it

Kershaw Leek came with finger prints all over and may be a footprint on it
It cleaned well so I didn't return it, (you know I'm weak when it is kershaws)

Buck Cadet (# 303, not the Chinese model)
Came with absolutely no snap when opening the Clip blade
absolutely no snap when opening the Sheep's foot blade
very little snap when opening the spey blade.
You have to push the blades all the way out to open them.

Common point an all three cases above, the boxes received were Scotch Tape closed

So I am thinking may be they are shipping customer returns ???
Could this be possible ?

Obviously, I do not expect to have an Amazon rep on this forum however would like to hear if any member had similar experiences with amazon.

Where else you buy your knives (except fleabay). ?

I buy my knives here on the exchange or from reputable dealers.

I've also bought at least 4 or 5 off Amazon with zero issues.

Those do sound like customer returns to me, and I wouldn't put it past them. Not being an actual knife business they may not really know what to look for when it comes to the details. If the knives lack any physical damage it's probably within their operational procedures to repackage and resell.

Are you sure that Amazon was the actual vendor?

Great point John, that could definitely have something to do with it.

I think most of my knife purchases have been actually sold by Amazon. It's been awhile though.

I've bought 9 knives off Amazon in the last 5 years. All but 2 were from Amazon LLC. All with zero issues.

Almost all (probably over 95%) of my Amazon dealings have been positive (mostly non-knife related). I have had few lost or damaged packages, but to their credit, they have always made it right.

However, having said this, I did once receive an item from them ("sold/shipped by Amazon") a few years ago that even still had the previous owner's note in the box explaining why the defective item had been returned. :thumbdn:

So yes, unfortunately it does happen. :grumpy:

I bought a Kershaw/Emerson CQC-6K off Amazon a few months back and returned it because it had a couple snail trails, and had someone else's pocket lint inside.
Granted, it was only a $30 knife.
But still, I paid for a new knife, not a used knife.
It was sold by Amazon and they refunded me immediately.
The three or four times I've ever had issues I've been refunded immediately.

Lots of horror stories when buying from them.
Lots of people will order a high end knife, replace it with a clone and return it for a full refund. The clone will be put back in stock and sold to the next guy.
So many EXCELLENT vendors here.....no reason to go elsewhere most of the time.

And THIS is the major problem with taking returns, no questions asked.
Yeah its nice that their return policy is good but like everything else, there is always scummy people looking to take advantage.
I concur, buy 'em from a reputable knife dealer or here on the forums

I have purchased countless knives from Amazon with nary a single issue. Same with eBay so long as I stick to sellers with ample sales and excellent feedback. No doubt its possible to have problems with any vendor, but with Amazon those are the (rare) exception rather than the rule.

The Amazon Prime price for one of Spyderco's flagship models is currently $54.10 shipped. That same knife from a well-regarded BF dealer is $73 shipped. Given my experience with Amazon, which has never been less than stellar, that's an easy choice.

I buy a lot of stuff from Amazon but, with very limited exceptions, would not buy a knife from them. I don't think they buy "seconds", or at least I hope no major knife company would be unscrupulous enough to sell them seconds not clearly marked as such. I do think they buy from the cheapest source and that sometimes results in them buying, and then selling, counterfeits. I am also convinced that they put returned merchandise that is not obviously broken back into stock because I've received things from them that have been obviously and clumsily repackaged. I can't see how their stock room people could possibly be knowledgeable about all the products Amazon sells, which means an unscrupulous customer could buy a real knife and return a fake, which is then put back into stock and sold.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if returned knives were being resold, considering how generous Amazon's return policy is, someone has to do something with those knives that get returned. I would only buy knives on Amazon that are being sold through Amazon directly and not an Amazon retailer. It's much safer. Also, Spyderco is now directly selling to Amazon, so I wouldn't worry about those either.

I used to buy knives exclusively on Amazon, mostly due to the reassurance that they will take returns if it was defective.

As I grew in my collecting, not only does Amazon lack selection, but other online vendors that support BF have just as great customer service, and the selection I want.

I can't remember my last knife from Amazon, but most have come from BladeHq, KnifeCenter, and KnifeWorks. Anytime I call I get an answer from someone who loves blades as much as I do.
