Amazon Trip

Hello all,

My Dad is going on a tour of the Amazon in September, hes going to be in a guided group, on a boat along the river. He will be sleeping on the boat at night.

Anyway, his birthday is coming up, and I have been racking my brains as to what to get him. I figured I could get him something for his trip, but I'm not sure what, not necessarily survival stuff, who knows. I'm looking for all the ideas I can at this point.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. Probably the original T-3. Or something.
 
You guys are coming up with some good suggestions. He already has a decent camera, and I have a feeling they are way out of my price range:). He has a case for it, I'll check and see if its waterproof though.

I'd never heard of Outdoor Research hats. Is the only benefit the lightness? Does that make them cooler? I must admit, I'm partial to the Tilly, and they are probably more his "style."

Any other cool ideas? He already got a flashlight, and has some OK knives.
 
-Headnet, the flying insects are unrelanting over there.

-Long sleeve shirt (no cotton) for arm protection.

-Bandana's for swating insects and sweat.

Maybe a book, long boat rides down the amazon are very boring.

How about a companion for the trip:thumbup:, Something like a guy who lives in CT, easy to get along with, loves the outdoors, specialy fond of the Amazon:D

I'm not the biggest guy by far, so I don't take up alot of room;):D

I even speak a lil Spanish!
 
Ha sorry Tony, if he wont even take his own son, you don't have much chance:p

I'll look into books and shirts for him, thanks bearthedog. A mosquito net seems like it would be handy too.

Cheap and handy. Get him an Amazon care package. Mosquito Headnet (WalMart/Target), Bandana, Binoculars, Long Sleeved Shirt, Book, and a small kit of emergency stuff (whistle, mirror, lighter, compass).

Thats a good idea. I'll look into it, shop around, check out what he doesn't have, I believe he might have already started buying stuff for the trip so its going to be a little tricky :).
 
An inflatable PFD - that way he will use it. Best gift my wife ever bought me for boat work.

Cheap and easy but one of the small packable, highly absorbant towels - again must have for boats. Hand sanitizer, paracord, seal-all waterproof bag.

I echo the comments on a tilley - just baught myself a hemp version - heavier then the nylon ones but also not as dorky looking. Used my hat in a downpour and kept my noggin dry!

Also the long sleeve, breathable, UV-protecting collard shirts is a great idea by Bear. Check out columbia which has a line of them - very good quality and I find I can where them in the hottest and high humidity conditions. Also quick a couple pair of dry pants and a good belt are useful. Nice thing about quick dry pants and shirts is that you can launder them on site and dry them in your cabin or hotel room.

Cheap handheld GPS like one of the basic garmen models run out about $100 if he doesn't have one already.

Here is one for an old guy if you are still brewing - probably won't have - get him one of the cheaper MP3 players and load it with a couple of books on tapes. Bet he'd love that - it is what I gave my dad on one of his trips and he was really loved it.
 
KDG - now theres some good ideas. Dad lives on a boat so hes already got a pretty nice inflatable life jacket...and he has an MP3player...and a GPS...pssh, what can you do with this guy :p

Hes a bit of a dork too, so the canvas Tilly would be perfect :D

As far as long sleeved shirts go, that seems to to be coming up a lot, I'll goto the store and check them out...and the towels are a good idea too!

And batteries will definitely be in there if I get him a package, of sorts.

You guys are good :cool: I have so much trouble with Dad, he is very particular.
