Amber Stag sources

It's almost guaranteed to be some of "Rootes of Ohio" (Tim Balda)'s stock. He sold off a large amount of it wholesale to misc people whom are reselling.

I remember the company name was something Alaska but the address wasn't actually in Alaska. Going off of memory here though.

Like I said...
I'm probably not at the point to be messing around with 100$ plus scales.
I mess up enough with 10$ scales.

I'll probably go with some bone first...
Until I can handle all the aspects of sizing the stag.
This is all a great read !

Lol Manny, you can get good amber stag for $30-$40 a set, in sizes to make slipjoints out of. I can even send you some junk stag to practice with.

The stuff being mentioned from Rootes, is good material, but it's overpriced, and mostly you're paying for length that you don't need, since there isn't hardly any left over 1-3/8" wide.

I usually buy anywhere from 3x1 to 3.5x1-1/8 for pocket knives, and I like a pretty heavily curved handle.

Yeah, I know who you're talking about, they've been at most of the shows past couple of years, and that material is definitely from Tim.

I only use carvers and tend to use big ones, so I have to pay what I have to pay. I currently have like 15-20 pieces ranging from hunter size to a couple in big bowie size including a "Musso size" piece that I got from Tim a year or so ago and maybe 10 or more carvers and a couple of rolls that aren't really suitable for anything that I want to do. I have one big pair of scales that i have had for years, but I can't figure out how to make them fit anything. When I say Musso size, i mean a piece like this which I used in 2009 and got from OrigIndia at Blade. the year.

Jerry Kochheiser. He's been doing all the major shows for 20 years, or close to it. It is Tim's stag and probably the end of the better stuff. He did have some good stuff at the LR show.

Maybe a year ago, Tim has TONS of REALLY nice carvers on his EBay store. Then the were gone. He has put up stuff lately, but 95% of it has been scales.

I collect all the red deer (european) shed i can have my hands on!! That said up till now y only used one, the worst....a lot of pratice is needed to learn to cut it, before i dare to touch the prettier denser stuff; Javand said it very well, you need to visualize the finished, contoured scale and then remove it from the shed

Tim lost most of his inventory to the bank, then a gentleman in St.Louis bought it from the bank. This was several years ago, but I think Tim was able to sneak off, keep, or hide some high grade stuff to sell at a later date.

There has been a metric chit ton of drama resounding Tim and his different knife related companies in the last 10 years.

I did not know that. All I knew was that he apparently had a REALLY good nose for very nice handle materials. Even as someone with legal turing , it is kind of funny to think about a bank taking chopped up bits of old animal bone as "collateral." :D

I believe the bank just took all they could get of anything that was worth any money. Tim has a very colorful past. He bought in huge quantities and was good at cutting and finishing stag. Before the stag (Banyan Bay) he was Ivory Works Limited and Wood Works Limited. He had huge quantities of mammoth ivory years ago.

Okay. I have heard of Banyan Bay. I may have bought some pieces from him early on before I met Chuck Bybee and the folks from OrigIndia.
