Amboyna bowie

I got to play with that one this weekend, and have to say first off that it is a pretty awesome piece of work. The wood is just gorgeous. (The stuff he had on before - not so much. :p) The hamon is crazy - heck - there is activity in the SPINE for crying out loud. But beyond the hamon, the overall design is very pleasing. I was there when Matt forged this out and what impresses me is that he has made exactly the knife he conceived. Sounds easy - but a lot harder in practice. This is a heck of a chopper.

I can also report that the reprofiling of the handle went spectacularly well. Huge changes weren't needed, but the small changes made had a huge impact on both aethetics and ergonomics. The new owner will be very happy - I have solid inside information to support that prediction. ;)

where did you get your steel?

I stole this piece from Mace... it's Aldo's 3/8" stock. I was pretty careful to normalize it a few times (MUCH easier to do in a kiln), and the only 'failure' to me was that I wanted total symmetry of the hamon and blew it when I didn't properly support the blade in the kiln and it fell over - in the process knocking some of my clay off. I didn't notice it until AFTER I had quenched, and there were a bunch of other blades from the weekend to heat treat... didn't want to hog the oven! Nonetheless, the difference in the styles has grown on me - kind of a "business on the left, pleasure on the right" thing.

You're too flattering, Rog... I think that the little changes in the handle were huge changes, and desperately needed to happen. Your input was invaluable. Guys, Roger didn't have this knife in his hands for 5 minutes before he could tell me what need changing, and HOW to change it! Truly a custom knifemaker's custom knifemaker - that's my main man Rog! It'll be proven at Blade when he unveils Ol' Yeller for the first time - a fabulous response to Karl Andersen's knifemaker's challenge, incorporating some tricky materials.

I'll try and get pictures posted soon, so that the changes can be viewed by all.

Thanks again for the comments, everyone!

where's those pics!!! C'mon already:grumpy:

Matt, I know you reworked the handle, now you're slacking on the pics. In your defense you're probably eating. Series 1 looked good, can't wait to see series 2.

Nice pics indeed. This one really shows the handle countours well:

I absolutely DESPISE what I call "broomstick" handles and really like the ergonomics of a handle profile like what Matt has shown here.
Nuthin' but cool.
I also like the plug for Roger's "Ol Yeller"!
Can't wait!

Thank you, Karl... that means a great deal to me, as your handles are exceptionally well thought out and finished.

Roger agonized over his knife,btw... you won't be disappointed!
