Nice work! Nice burl!
How is it holding in place? Can you do me a big big favor and show me how you did it? I picked up a nice piece of maple burl this week-end and I might give that a shot!
Thanks!
Furync, thanks for the compliment!
The key to the design is making a filler for the center of the handle. The thickness needs to be 0.156". I used maple. Then take two 1/4" fluted dowels, drill through the filler and 0.125" into the inside of each scale. Cut the dowel to fit (0.406 for you engineers). Sand with 150, 220, 400 and 800. Bond it all together with waterproof adhesive/epoxy then finish with 1500 and 2000 grit sandpaper.
The next step is to dye the wood. I prefer a mix of 2/3 walnut, 1/3 red mahogany. I use alcohol based TransTint Dye which is much better than stain.
I then put 3 coats of Tung Oil on them, lightly sanding between coats and follow up with Tom's 1/3 Mix Military Wax.
