American Flag on Schrade Box.

Recently I purchased an Old timer sheep horn handled sow belly knife at Smokey Mtn. Knifeworks. I read the made in China but I still wanted the knife. Its quality was more than satisfactory and price was excellent.

I noticed the American flag on the box. It did not mislead me to think it was American made. I always look for country of origin. However, in my opinion the flag should not be on any foreign made products of any nature. I have seen the flag on other products in other industries. I do not agree with this use of the American Flag. Maybe after 9-11, companies here in the USA are just trying to be patriotic.

I will e-mail the president of Taylor Brands so he can defend his packaging.

Thank You
Bob Watson

If you check the archives of this forum you will see that this subject has been brought up many times. It is quite convoluted and the knife you bought is the product of a well thought out plan and desire to achieve the exact result it has. The letter to Taylor will be a moot and futile action he and his foreign partners ( bosses ) for which he is simply a figure head could not care less.

You are simply coming in on the end of a well enacted scenario now that people are accepting these " satisfactory quality price excellant" communist prison labor made imitations of what was an american made true quality product from an american firm 100 years old forced into a receivership to a great extent due to this plan. It will only be a short step to the acceptence of the packaging and illegal and immoral use of our nations flag. The same flag that is drapped over the fallen bodies of those gave all to fight the very ideas beliefs and form of govt which is producing these "satisfactory quality price excellant" products. It dosen't matter it is the same plan that is being enacted in many fields. It is our fault the flag, ( that I love ) is in effect only a symbol. Its importance is in what has been sacrificed for and what it stands for not the picture itself, that is only there to sell more knives which is all that these people care about. The true represenative icon is the knife you will carry in you pocket and the insidious plan it represents to destroy not the flag but for that which it represents.

Personally I thankyou for noticing the flag on the box and your feelings toward it being used in such a manner. However the next time you salute your flag or stand and say the pledge think of the knife in your pocket. I like to think of it as a small tangible piece of evil made by those who support everything unamerican and would revel in our demise and laugh at those who have forgotten all the lessons of the past.

The satisfactory quality of this knife is the acceptence of an inferior product which is simply all that is available since the real thing is gone ( through these peoples efforts) . The price I will not ever find satisfactory the price has been paid by others .

Sorry if my posting seems melodramatic however if you go back in the postings you will understand that this is a cause and subject quite close to many of our hearts. Your knife is a small thing it is the resident evil it represents that I am addressing. Please forgive my zeal in regard to your posting if I have offended I apologize. It is obvious you have a true feeling for your country and its flag I just wanted you to know some of the facts behind the subject. If you ever decide that you are not pleased with your purchase and
so advise me I will be glad to personally send you a real ( and new ) Schrade ( a different model ) at my own expense. A pocket knife is a personal thing. Much like someone you call a friend, like I would expect from a friend I prefer a knife I can be proud of.

Yours would ( I feel) be suitable for burial in a bowl of rice with some american tears and blood mixed in it. Then I personally feel it would truly be in a satisfactory condition. However the price will always be to high for me.

Of course this is only my opinion good luck on the letter thankyou for caring about the flag ( it is a lot more than many would do ). Oh yes and enjoy your new knife AHH SOO LT

LT, it's so hard to understand your feelings when you hold back your true feelings. :D

Well said. Well said, indeed.

Welcome Bob, glad you found us. Thanks for joining with us that have also written to Taylor Cutlery asking them to remove the American Flag from the boxes containing Chinese knives.

(edited to delete some jabs at Taylor that would serve no useful purpose-- although they would be awfully appropriate)

Your right Ted I have to try to be a little more outspoken. I was recently told by someone I know who once was the editor ( of a great metropolitan news paper) no not Perry White. However I can never resist saying that to him. He also taught writing classes at state college when he retired. He told me that regarding my writing I usually got the point across and as he put it that was golden. Then he asked me why it took me so many words to do it. He also wondered what it was like to live in a world where life was one unpunctuated often mispelled run on sentence. LT PS do you think he was just trying to butter me up?

I don't think he was buttering you up because I really don't understanding what he was talking about regarding the punctuation and run-on sentences, which as we all know, can be very difficult to read and interpret, assuming of course, that there was someone (not here obviously) who would ever be so bold as to try and stuff tons (meaning lots - typically more than required) of phrases into something that could have been said much more tersely, if you get my meaning, which isn't so obviously stated, but stated, none-the-less.

Welcome Bob,

I agree with you about the use and misuse of the American flag, I don't think that you can do much though (gosh, I hate being pessimistic), It's probably worse here in Mexico where country of origin may be in the package but not in the product itself, you should see all the stuff sold here made locally or in the Orient but marked "New York" or "Italy" or whatever.

Sometimes it is a real challenge to read trough some posts here, I mean, it is already in a foreign language, now make it with long sentences, little punctuation and fancy words, very educational though....:).

"Ese dicho que te han dicho que yo he dicho no lo he dicho, mas si yo lo hubiera dicho estaría muy bien dicho, por haberlo dicho yo".

If you ever need a hand translating, Don, ask away. College Spanish is a few years behind me, but I can still take some of the technical language and simplify it. :)

Gee, thanks Sword and Shield, I am really just playing the victim.... I was in bilingual schools since Kindergarten and spent a few years in the USA, I do get lost sometimes with slang and fancy words but I can always search the Web.

"That which you were told that I said I did not say, but If I had said it it would have been very well said, for having been said by me".

Quien Sabe? No ese yo. Pero yo comprendo cervesa, tequila, cigaro, y bonita feminina. Lo siento yo ese una gringo. LT PS don;t worry about the Don understanding he is the case ace in this deck.

Oh Boy! Lt's trying a new language.
"bonita feminina." Aint that a fish?

Subject: Schrade Boxes

Dear Mr. Watson
Received your email concerning the Schrade box design with the American Flag. When we purchased Schrade we were in a tremendous rush to bring product back to the stores. We hired the former Schrade artist that had created all of the Schrade artwork. Schrade artwork had the American Flag on imports as well as domestic.

The new box designs do not carry the American Flag on domestic products or foreign made products. We have redesigned all the new boxes and you will see the new artwork within the next several months. Thank you for your concern.

Sincerely,
Stewart Taylor

Thanks, Bob, for both the update and your pursuing this in the first place. As you can read above, we have some strong feelings about the current 'State of Schrade'.

I hope you'll become a regular here, perhaps becoming as intrigued and interested as the rest of us in the first one hundred years of Schrade knives.

We also, as you can see, engage in scholarly discussions of language, the arts, culture, ect.

Welcome again!

Phil
