American Lawman

Thanks guys! Bought one today, was allready interested in the knife but now with your comments I had no choice! I will be taking the knife appart. I will also coat the scales OD green. It'l look awesome. Thanks again.

I got mine on sale at the Baumholder BX last year for $20, it's been sitting in a Seat Pocket in my car and I almost forgot about it. I just shaved my entire arm with it after using a Smiths Consumer Products DCS4 Diamond Combo Fine/Coarse Knife Sharpener and an old leather belt. It just wasn't shaving like a real razor so I kept at it until the arm ran out of hair. :P

It isn't my favorite knife in the world, I look at it as just a tool that holds an edge well. It's definitely nice to have handy when I need a knife, which is why it is kept in the car.

How does the American Lawman compare to the AK-47 and the Recon 1?

Materials and workmanship are identical, the main difference in my opinion is that the AL is a better utility design. The handle on the AK47 and Recon has a sort of guard that keeps the blade a bit further from my hand than I like, while the AL has a nice choil that allows me to choke up on the blade.

I doubt that there are huge performance differences between the three. The AK47 probably has an advantage if self defense is a potential use of your knife, since it has a thumb plate that works as a wave.

I like the AL best because it's more of a traditional drop point design that I find very useful.

Ok, thanks for the info. I may order an AL now.

I bought a NIB mini-Lawman for my grandson. He couldn't open the blade. His "big" dad was finally able to...said later that he'll have to put it in the drawer for a few yrs until the kid gets stronger. It was all I could do to open it. VERY discouraging to watch your grandson open his new gift and cannot use it.
I've heard those springs are strong...but good grief!

In my experience the strength required to disengage a tri-ad lock can really vary from knife to knife. One way to make it easier to open is to leave the knife half open for a week, as this will weaken the spring faster. However if the lock is absurdly difficult to unlock I'd contact Cold Steel and see about sending the knife to them for maintenance.

Had one but gifted it to my SIL. Thought it was a great value but the way the cutout is on the grip just didn't fit my hand the way I wanted it to. Replaced it with an AK-47 which I'm very happy with. While I would not discourage anyone from purchasing a Lawman I would suggest they handle one first if possible.

Might be better off getting a used one since its cheaper and might already be broken in, to those who are in the market for one. I'd definitely pick up a factory second/blem if I ended up at one of those Cold Steel parking lot sales. This knife isn't exactly a safe queen so its going to get a few blemishes from use anyway.

I know this has already been answered but let me have a go at the lawman vs ak

The American Lawman has the better handle design and is far more comfortable in hand with a better blade shape.

the AK has a nice pommel?(is that the word I am looking for?) that tends to get just as much use for me as the knife and in my 2XL hands is steel more comfortable then my wrapped bk-11.

if only they made a Lawman with the pommel...

btw I prefer to carry my Beaver tail mini tac over the folders anymore. (crappy finish allows for some cosmetic rust and has a rather thin blade)

You know if you were good with metalworking you might be able to make a separate pommel that could attach on both sides where the pocket clip screws are.

On the evil bay someone has a Lawman with the coating removed for $46. Just thought somebody here might be interested.
