american made clothes?

The company that pisses me off the most is Carhartt. Probably made in the same factories that Wal Mart brands are made but cost twice as much or more. I still have union made (UFCW) Carhartts. My coat is almost 20 years old. I have some denim shirts that are 15 years old. Same with some Red Wings. I always bought those. I know you can still get American made Red Wings but I've switched to wearing Danners and Justins.

AMEN! Buying American for the sake of buying American is paradoxically a sure way to guarantee American manufacturers grow fat and complacent. And lose in the long run.

I buy products that offer the best value, regardless of country of origin. This allows me to stretch my money to do the things I want to do, spread the wealth Adam Smith style. It's not as if this is some radical new concept. Protectionism ends up makes losers of everybody.

I have to agree with this. There are more meaningful and practical ways to be patriotic.

Thanks for the links. I try to keep all my business in t he USA. And Im doing pretty good at it. I may pay a bit more nad sometimes may have to save money for a couple months to get something but it is worth it in the long run.

Carhart is still made here, and they make some good stuff. The only problem is that its so durable...

If you have ever seen a vrand of shoes marked SAS, that stand for San Antonia Shoe, made in Texas. If you make it to an independant shoe store you might looks for some. they pretty good quaility. Aren't Merril's made in the USA?

Up here in Canada, most retail stores sell clothing made in Asia. The stuff that isn't is prohibitively expensive, at least for me. I do want to give credit to Buck knives, though. Even though, some of their manufacture takes place in Asia, some doesn't and they are marked as such on their web site. That let's you make an informed choice.

I hope to never buy any knife made outside of the U.S. or Canada and I will pay the extra bucks, if I have it. A couple of exceptions, of course, would be for the scandis and Fallkniven. Of course, I think some of the Fallkniven are made in Japan, aren't they?

All of the Fallknivens are made in Japan.

If you want the basic Fallkniven profile with USA manufacture, check out the Cold Steel SRK. They are about half the price of a Fallkniven too and can be found with coated or plain blades.

When I first saw one, I thought it was a Fallkniven.

Cold Steel is not a US manufacturer. Cold Steel is a design and marketing company, whose knives are made in Japan, Taiwan, and China. The Carbon V knives were made by Camillus in the US, but that's all over now.

My 2 year old Carhartt insulated bibs are labeled US (UFCW) made...

The Wal Mart brand looked like private labeled "Walls", anyone know for sure?

I have never noticed the Wal-Mart knock-off Carharts, so I can't even guess who makes them or where. My most recent Carhart purchase was about 2 years ago and that was US made, and had the union made logo on the tag.

What does upset me is the excessive pricing on carhart stuff. For example, I had the Muleskins jacket, which was US/union made. Muleskins was the Carhart vallue line. That jacket (which was the same as the arctic coat, IIRC) was slightly less refined (ie. had a duck collar instead of the corduroy like material, cloth logo instead of leather- small things like that) and cost 1/3 of the price.

Thanks for that info. I didn't realize that they didn't make their US-produced items in house.
