The Regulator was one of the first Bussekin that caught my eye, as I appreciate the no nonsense classic bowie styling, was curious about the Res C, and thought it was a good length for a general camp knife. So when the American Regulator came up a few weeks ago, at a great price, I jumped on it. To my surprise it came in the fabled "2 weeks" and I had it by Christmas Eve.
I immediately knew that it was a great knife. Ultra thick spine, full flat grind, nice thin edge, simple comfortable handle, great blade blade shape. It came with a good edge, not quite as sharp or even as my previous knife from the shop but definitely usable.
I used it to open some presents on Christmas Eve, they seem to like putting zip ties on children's toys now:
I found it slices really well for a knife of its size. I've used it to make some salads, and other food prep. I also used ti to slice up some cheese and sausage for a New Year's Eve party platter:
I then used it to split some logs to dry for fires between Christmas and New Years. It batons really well, with such a thick spine it splits the pieces quickly. The slightly upswept tip can sometimes stick into the baton, but it hasn't damaged the tip (still needle like):
I decided to test its chopping against some other larger fixed blades. Cold Steel Kukri Machete (heavily modified), Becker BK4 Machax (modified tip), Scrap Yard Knife Company American Regulator:
15 chops:
20 chops:
Batoning. You can easily tell that the thicker the blade the quicker it splits the wood:
The American Regulator is impressive at every task I've used it for, to put it simply. The Res C handles are just great, after using them the BK4 handles and their shock was pretty uncomfortable (though I have to admit the handle has always been a bit short for me). It's obviously not made to be a dedicated chopper, but with such thick stock and thin edge it bites deep. I accidentally nicked the edge of the American Regulator with an errant swing of the BK4. Amazingly, it didn't chip but did roll. Thankfully, not so bad that it needs a real resharpening.
I have been using the BK4 sheath to carry the American Regulator, but have ordered a custom sheath (as soon as I pay for it) that I will most likely switch to asap.
In conclusion, I really like this knife and look forward to using it more. If you guys have any pictures of your American Regulators, or any of the older Regulators, please feel free to share!
