American Tanto vs Spear Point

Tantos are a bit of a PITA to sharpen. I had one given to me and would never buy one because I don't see the benefit to offset the sharpening difficulty.

Are you serious? Sharpening a straight edge is not what I would call a difficult task at all. Try sharpening a Kershaw Offset or a Spyker and get back to us ;)

You have given no scientific proof that either blade shape is better or worse for any purpose including stabbing car hoods. Your off topic rant about serrations is equally devoid of any proof that they are worse than any other profile and all you give is your personal feelings that you don't prefer cutting with them.
Until you substantiate your claims I must say that your opinions seem like useless jokes.

"Those tanto point knives you like are a pain in the tuches to sharpen with that fercockte secondary edge. And stay away from my car hood with that thing!"

-- Letter of Albert Einstein to Niels Bohr, November 12. 1937.

It's science.

You didn't read my post I guess. I said they are a bit of a PITA to sharpen. That is due to the second edge. I didn't say they were impossible or even very difficult. Yes there are other blade types that are more difficult to sharpen but we weren't discussing them. I don't stab anything with a knife so I don't need that. I was just expressing an opinion based on my situation. If you have a different opinion, that is fine. It's a free country.

I gotta chime in and say that I lean towards the spearpoint for all of the reasons stated earlier. Plus, I'm not a fan of tanto points period although my CQC7 uses a tanto and it works for it, BUT still not a huge fan of them..'

Cheers,

The REVERSE Tanto is the only way to go if your into Tanto's. It gives you the best of both worlds. I have a Benchmade 950 Rift which uses this design and it is my EDC blade, probably will be for life. Check one out if you haven't seen one before. They utilize basically a drop point blade but the TOP SIDE of the point is the REVERSE Tanto. This allows the entire bottom edge of the blade to be used for cutting unlike a regular Tanto but because the Tanto is on the top of the point rather than the bottom it still gives the point the advantage of what a Tanto is designed for, a strong point that's great for piercing. I've got allot of knives but the Benchmade 950 in my opinion is the greatest folding knife in the world with its reverse Tanto 154CM blade, Axis locking mechanism and gorgeous G-10 sculpted handles. BUT, that's just me, everyone has there own like/dislikes but at least check one out, they are AMAZING.

The REVERSE Tanto is the only way to go

i just checked out that Benchmade, sorry but a traditional American tanto is what i need [in my work] and it performs very well for what i need it to do
so no, the reverse tanto isn't the only way to go.
