These pop up on eBay all the time at great prices.
My question is, are these legit? Or do you need to save and drop the serious cash on a benchtop tester?

Thanks guys

Shawn

They are Legit and many makers are using them. The question is will you be happy with it or save for the Heavy Weight which do come up on the second hand market.

Haha i don't know enough about hardeness testers to know what I'll be happy with hahaha

I like the idea of a small tester that doesn't take up any room, I just worry about accuracy which I guess might be kinda silly for wanting to spend under $500 bucks

Is there a performance difference on the benchtop?

I have a bench top it's accurate and was pricey however I make a lot of knives so it was a necessity. I have seen the portables in use and they are convenient, but there is a learning curve to get correct reading results. The one I saw in use was giving the operator heart burn. He was not sure if the material was properly heat treated he took quite a few readings of his Test Block as well as materials to finally dial in his readings. For a hobby maker and lots of time to test they might be ok.

I guess it’s like everything else, it’s easy when you know how to.

I have a China clone. It takes me less than one minute to take it out of the box and check a knife. And the results are consistent.

So based on my China version I would recommend it. I’m very happy with it.

Right....It didn't look all that complicated but the guy I watched is a real fanatic about precision...so maybe it was just his OCD nature that was in play?

@ Currenthill I've been looking for a decent clone, can you say the name?
Thanks,
