I obtained this saber many years ago out of an old collection in New Orleans. It is one of 1200 that President Buchanan's Secretary of War, John B. Floyd (a Virginian and later a Confederate general) ordered in March, 1860 to be sent to Virginia prior to the Civil War. These are identified by the star marking on the pommel. They were eventually used by Jeb Stuart's cavalry.
